Mitsubishi's 65" LaserVue 1080p 3D TV gets evaluated
It's 3-D Friday again chaps and chapesses (by the way how many girls are members anyway, show yourselfs?)
Engadget.com...
"We'll be frank -- Mitsubishi's 65-inch LaserVue L65-A90 was one of the most stunning things we saw at CEDIA 2008, so we're not surprised to hear that one of the very first production units impressed the lucky folks over at TheTechLounge. Said individuals were able to take a first-hand look at Mitsu's forthcoming beast, and while the situation was obviously optimal for viewing, they couldn't help but praise the TV. The demonstration included two LaserVue sets, one of which was displaying 3D 1080p content from an HTPC and another that was setup beside LCDs for comparison. When staring at the aforesaid comparison setup, critics noted that "color performance on the LaserVue was noticeably more impressive." There's lots more reaction and images where this came from, so delve on into the read if this here set is on your wish list.

$7,000 - okay I'll take two while the economy is at rock bottom, surely now is the right time to buy tech?. http://gizmodo.com/5061513/mitsubishis- ... re-awesome

Speaking of chapesses, I noticed that the 3D Film & Interactive Festival we've been advertising is put on by the Women In Film non-profit organisation.
But my favourite chapess in the field of stereoscopic 3D has to be Carolina Cruz-Neira, http://www.lite3d.com/team_ccruzneira.htm who invented the CAVE and wrote all the software for it, and who made VR Juggler. The CAVE is a big room with a rear-projector completely filling each wall and floor, stereo shutter glasses, and head-tracking like in Johnny Lee's wiimote video to produce something just like the holodeck in Star Trek. It's hard to describe how real the 3D illusion is. But check out this other chapess using one (and pretending it is for serious geological research): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6NN5JKlIi0
Note that the seam in the screen is actually two walls at right angles, and it is some very fancy head-tracking (camera tracking in this case) and mathematical projection matrices that makes it look like a seamless 3D object is in front of the screens. Note also the cursor that sticks out the end of her wand, and the laser beam that comes out of it. Those effects aren't really there, but they appear to be hovering there in space, perfectly aligned with the end of the wand, even when both the wand and the viewer (or camera) can move around the scene freely.

Initial rumors from CES suggested that the Laservue's laser light could be polarized at the emitting end so that passive glasses could be used. It is very disappointing that this is not the case. Passive glasses seem MUCH more likely to survive the trials of the living room than even the most robust and user-friendly shutter glasses. Still, as they say, it's frikin' laser beams blasting you in 3D.. so what's not to like?

but yeah, I know the phrase "feels like you are actually there" gets tossed a lot in the stereo3d world, I guess in this example you will actually be there and your brain will just have to surrender to the fact that you are standing in a geometrically perfect room of 512*512 textures....

That's why Johnny Lee's video became so popular. Most people are too dumb to put the tracker on the camera. And those people who do put the tracker on the camera don't move the camera around enough so you can actually see what's going on. That CAVE video would have been much better if they had moved the camera more like Johnny Lee did. CAVEs have been around for a long time now, but people suck at demonstrating their awesomeness.
Your VR920 only has accelerometers and a 3D compass. It has no way of tracking position. Unlike your HMD, with a CAVE you are only interested in head position, not rotation. Although you do need to measure head rotation for stereoscopic mode.
I used an Essential Reality P5 Glove as a head tracker when I tried to make a CAVE at home with my 19 inch CRT monitor and my small TV sitting next to it.
Sorry for hijacking this thread to talk about CAVEs. That Laser DLP looks amazing. But I am disappointed by the lack of passive polarisation.

OMG that cave is freaking awesome! I would get a touch of vertigo if I looked over that last precipice!
Now if there was only a way to physically "walk" around endlessly! Either a huge "trackball" to stand on, or some kind of treadmill that can change direction, I don't know how that would work, maybe make it 25'x25' so it can take a little strafing until it can rotate to your direction of travel?
I wonder if you could hold a material tight enough to walk on while stretched over a surface, yet let it go loose so that you can store it under the room and feed it to the platform? Cool anyway I guess.
Or could it be something as simple as wearing shoes with very "slick" bearings that make it feel like you are walking in place? Perhaps while being held by the torso to prevent falls.
If anybody has links to something like that I would love to see them .
