While some of us would have liked to attend GDC in person this year, we had more pressing matters right here at home!  Anyone want to guess what the heck we are building that will make all future Oculus Rift owners insanely jealous?

We'll get more pictures up as things near completion.

Hmmm...I am going to guess an add on to make the Rift a 6DOF device or retrofitting a 1080p panel into the Rift. Both of which a fair number of us have been thinking about. If you guys have pulled either of these off, we would love to know how you did it so we can mod ours as well.

Not a booth, and not mini.

If this isnt rigs for an optical tracking system, photogrammetry scanner or a cave system I am really curious to what it is.

May I remind you D.I.Y temporal displacement hardware is illegal in this sector & space time unless accompanied by a valid oculus rift development kit (Some units shipping http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/29/ocul ... -shipping/), ownership of said O.R. is required within the statutory period to avoid repercussions from MTBS secret police.

Its one of those walking ball cages that a person gets into. What he's putting together is on of the outside roller supports.

I'm an engineer so I know this kinda stuff. Its so he doesn't start walking into walls and banging into stuff.

cheers

BTW... does anyone else find the picture looks unnatural due to the shadows? I think it's a problem with having a flash in between the sensors; it puts the light in a position that we're not used to seeing, unless you spend a lot of time with one of those forehead mounted lights, I guess.
Anyway... any updates on this project? I kind of want it to be a FPV, fully articulated robot.

removed until further notice... maybe i saw something i wasn't supposed to.

About the pictures i'm on Androids line. Shadows are probably looking a bit odd due to the cameraflash and it's position. I have heaps of similar pictures.

I think i saw a post from Neil (either that, browser pulled a joke on me or i might be psychic (or not....)) that he confirmed that it was a "fully automatic articulated robot, i'll let you guys know how it's going. (something like that, no real details)". The post was gone when i submitted mine so i guessed that Neil either regret revealing or joked by making a false positive on the post above. After all it was april 1'st...
Before the edit my submission was: "Ok! This is cool! Do you intend to hook up the robot to the net and let mtbs3d users control it? Maybe even with a stereoscopic visual feedback? 8-)
Good luck in your build!"
Dunno if it stills or tickles the curiosity even more.

"removed until further notice... maybe i saw something i wasn't supposed to." was all my edit work. :)

Now: If it is a fully automated articulated ar-robot (housecleaing robot as example) with an interface over the net that makes control possible by users it could cause problems. I'd suggest some simple rules:
1: Whoever decides to emty the disposal container on the clean carpet can espect a permanent ban from having fun with the robot in the future!
2: The camera will not be turned on at all times and access to all facilities is limited. Please respect this!
3: If the camera is turned off, simply send an acknowledge signal through the robot. Over three signals for each session is considered spam, will end the session and the turn goes to another member. If the camera isn't turned on inspite of acknowledge signal sent, please respect this and come back another time.
4: Chasing the cat is futile! He/she is faster than you!
5: Stay away from DJ if he's equipped with screwdriver and pliers!
6: About Smell-O-Vision: No begging at the foodtable or the session will end in advantage for the next user. Also: Repeated offenders at the cat litterbox will expect permanent ban.

Had too much time on my hand... my apologies.

Edit.. I saw the comment on the dilithium crystals. Be sure to wear gloves when handlig the material corresponding to them, especially the antimatter! There may also be a good reason to remove the rule about chasing the cat. The object will probably be faster. Sorry...

@Likay - Sorry to inform you, but I don't think Neil said anything about the robot, it was a joke post by me. While being a joke, I have often wondered if this would be possible, or even worth doing.

Ah! Believe me when I tell you I haven't forgotten about this. In fact, my job at the university is Manager of Immersive Technology Services, so if I *DID* forget about this, I'd be out of a job very quickly.

The installation is still incomplete. I have something special planned, but it's just not ready yet. Patience!
