'Avatar' Producer: 3D Mania Is 'Crazy,' But 4D 'Avatar' Works
by Sharon Waxman

The new rage in Hollywood may be 3D, but the guy partly responsible for setting off the fad is calling the studio’s race to chase the format “crazy.”

Jon Landau, the producer of Oscar-nominated “Avatar,” took aim at studios making last-minute decisions to convert their movies into 3D to make more money – singling out Warner Brothers, which just announced it would be converting its summer blockbuster “Clash of the Titans” into 3D.

“Taking a movie and turning it into 3D in seven weeks – I think it’s crazy,” said Landau at a producer’s panel discussion at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Saturday.

“It’s a creative decision,” he said. “It would be like shooting a movie in black and white and trying to colorize it three weeks before it’s released.”

Avatar in 4D sounds wild, but maybe a little too wild for a 3 hour flick.

Most all 3D films released recently have been native 3D since they were mostly animated features. I know G-Force was a conversion, but even then only the live-action parts were converted and they rendered the animation in native 3D. Also Harry Potter and the recent Superman movie had select scenes converted. But by and large mostly all the 3D films released in the past few years have been real 3D. And I think Warner is stupid. 7 weeks to convert an entire flick is crazy.
