Analyst questions the future of 3D gaming

Post by metalqueen »

Hmmm... What are you thoughts on the opinions expressed in this article??
Analyst questions the future of 3D gaming

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has told TG Daily that the multiplayer community will likely ignore the hype and adopt a wait-and-see attitude towards 3D gaming.

"I don't see 3D being well received amongst the gaming community for [titles] with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer. The most hardcore of gamers don't play Call of Duty for its visual appeal, they play to satisfy their competitive urge or their satisfaction of unlocking new skins, weapons, and accessories," said Divnich.

"The same is applied to movies and television. 3D certainly adds a visual appeal to action based movies, but what about comedies, romance, and even drama movies? Does The Hangover in 3D really make the experience more appealing? No."
According to James Cameron, it's right the opposite and he's going to try to demostrate it shooting a drama in 3D.

But I find the rest is quite accurate to reality. I still play counter-strike sometimes, and I don't feel the need to turn 3D on because the game is not about visuals. It's a HL 1 engine game but it's still played in an era of hyperrealistic graphics.

Just like FPS games are not for everyone, FPS games in stereoscopic 3D are not for everyone either. We don't want people to suffer a cardiac after a few hours of playing some creepy FPS in stereo 3D.

However, I would love to play some role-playing and adventure games in stereo 3D - I'm pretty sure classic titles like the Myst series, Grim Fandango, The Neverhood etc. which feature reach external environments should look spectacular in stereo if re-made in true 3D... has anyone tried Tales of Monkey Island or The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition in stereo? :shutter

well i play all kinds of games in stereo 3d

My personal option is that 3d improves the visual quality even beyond "simply" putting depth into the game
Even games a few years old like ddo or black&white that I wouldnt normally play again look awesome in s3d.

And the optimisation towards s3d gaming is only at its very beginning.
Avatar i.e. does a very nice job configuring depth according to screen size and viewing distance, others like batman aa work towards s3d compatible guis but I haven't seen a game yet where the depth of the playing field is part of the game design itself. I mean it would be interesting to see a game i.e. that you could not play without s3d because you have to precicely judge distance between objects and so on.

Keep in mind that the article is focused on multiplayer gaming. I also play all kinds of games, old or new, in 3D, except counter-strike as I said. Once you get addicted to a multiplayer game you no longer care about graphics or sounds, all you want is frags! :D

I read the article and I think the author has a rather narrow view when he talks about multiplayer games.

Me for example when i hear multiplayer i think more massively (MMO) like WOW, Aion, LotrO ...
I played of lot of those in s3d and it really enriched my experience but I found I couldnt play them in s3d all the time because they are not optimized for it GUI wise. Most of them rely heavy on seeing name-tags and hitpoint bars of the characters besides long passages of quest-text. since these often are not where they supposed to be at the right depth its rather tiresome.
Still I could envision a new generation of MMOs that can do without most of these elements by replacing quest text with voiceovers and npc/pc names with a bigger variety of unique character models, a 3d cursor and so on. These types of games consist of at least 2 elements : leveling craze and immersion and at least in terms of immersion s3d has a lot to offer.

Also his last statement "I won't be opting for some 3D glasses when I play Sudoku on my Nintendo DS" could not only be applied to s3d but to sound, a screen beyond monochrome and hd resolution as well... No1 questions that there are some great b&w Charly Chaplin Movies or that a book/ comic can also be entertaining but I wonder why so many people can't simply acnolege that s3d is the next logical step in the evolution of visual storytelling.

Yeah, and the truth is that I've also suffered from that narrow view about multiplayer games  CS is what always comes to my mind when talking about multiplayer. I've never tried any other thing except a few multiplayer hours with simulators, which, like MMO, are better in 3D.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 could have PS2 style graphics and it would have still sold the 10+ million copies that it did.
I'm sure the fact that is has some of the best graphics out of any FPS game didn't hurt sales. I stopped reading right there, dude don't know jack.
