FOXTEL plans to broadcast its first 3D programs next year as pay-TV companies join the attempt to bring technology similar to that used in the box-office hit movie Avatar to the home.
Chief executive Kim Williams said the company's existing high-definition set-top boxes were 3D-ready and test broadcasts had been conducted in Australia.
At last week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, electronics manufacturers from Sony to Samsung to Panasonic announced the launch of new 3D HD flat-screen TVs, with the first products likely to be on sale in Australia in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in June.
"Foxtel's HD set-top units have already carried 3D signals in our premises with terrific picture clarity," Mr Williams said.
Foxtel would continue to run trials on 3D transmissions over the next year, he said.

Hi,
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of News Corporation and US/Australian dual citizen - controls Foxtel, an Australian Cable TV service.
It would not be overly surprising if Australia is being used by News Corporation as a beta test site for the rollout of S3D, as Australia is a modern english speaking culture with a relatively small population.
Any problems or setbacks with the introduction and bedding-in of S3D there would not have a serious ongoing global impact for News Corporation.
Thanks.

Foxtel are a joke. They delay showing live pay per view UFC events untill the next day to show re-runs of Andre Rieu concerts.
