ViewSonic Offers Affordable 3D Projector
by M. David Stone

LAS VEGAS—With 3D poised to (potentially) become the next big thing in movies and home entertainment, ViewSonic is announcing its 3D-ready PJD6220-3D projector this week at CES.

The projector offers a native XGA (1024x768) resolution and the ability to accept HD video input up to 1080i as well as PC input at up to SXGA+ (1400x1050). It's rated at 2200 ANSI lumens with a 2500:1 contrast ratio.

Given how little 3D content is available as yet, buying a 3D-ready projector is a kind of insurance against obsolescence. There's not much to see yet that takes advantage of the new feature, but you'll be ready for the 3D wave when it shows up. Ideally, by paying a little extra now for a feature you don't really need yet, you'll save money in the long run by not having to replace the projector later.

ViewSonic says that the PJD6220-3D shares most of its features with the ViewSonic PJD6220, the difference being the 3D feature, courtesy of a Texas Instruments 3D DLP engine. According to TI, the engine is similar to the one in the $30,000 F10 AS3D that the Norwegian manufacturer projectiondesign announced at InfoComm in June, 2008. One of the PJD6220-3D's key features is its affordable price, at $1,300.

"There's not much to see yet" - "a feature you don't really need" ?? This guy is not a 3d gamer for sure :)
Nice proejector anyway. Right now I prefer low cost to resolution. I'll end up with one of these to begin my personal projector era.

Seems Viewsonic is already behind here - how is this more expensive and lower resolution projector more compelling than Optoma's new 3d offering? ($750 for 1200x800 native)

XGA resolution is a joke. Why not make it black and white while they are at it?

Isn't the Viewsonic's PJ $200 cheaper than Optoma's?

I bought my Optoma for $700 and it seems to have very similar specs.

The optoma has an end user price listed at $750 for the 1280x800 3d version - much cheaper than the $1300 price quoted for this Viewaonic XGA projector!
