Encounters Film Festival enters the third dimension

Monday 16 Nov 2009 - 11:42

The Encounters Short Film Festival kicks off tomorrow in Bristol, with five days of short films, animations, and industry events. It's one of the UK's leading short film events, and this year it includes a special session on stereoscopic 3D.

This year sees the launch of a new strand dedicated to animation, titled Animation Focus. This features screenings -- including a preview of Mary & Max, the feature debut from the director of Harvie Krumpet -- and a special retrospective of the works of eminent Russian animator Andrei Khrzhanovsky.

Animation Focus also pays special attention to the rise of stereoscopic 3D, with two sessions aimed at industry insiders dedicated to the subject. Skillset Presents Stereo 3D, Take 2 features panel of experts including gaming legend Andrew Oliver, tereo 3D guru Phil Streather, CEO of Principal Large Format; Simon Robinson, chief scientist of The Foundry; and makers of Stereo 3D software, Jan Rogowski, co-founder Red Star Animation and Vicky Godfrey, co-director of SquareZero.

The panel debates why stereo 3D is taking off now, and whether it's a gimmick or a new technology that's here to stay. They also attempt to define what new technical and conceptual skills are needed to create engaging Stereo 3D.

Aside from its animation strand, the festival features screenings of hundreds of shorts, networking events, workshop and panel debates, and gala awards. For full details and to book tickets visit the Encounters website.
