When are we getting 3D TVs?
The state of play in the manufacturers' race to take over our homes
by Dan Sung

Home made efforts on YouTube and the inventive stills on Flickr are all very well and good but the big question on everyone's lips is when are 3D TVs actually going to be available to us. Sky has got the broadcast side of things ready for 2010, Channel 4 has got something special lined up for this autumn and Blu-ray is all set to deal with 3D movies too, so the hardware has to be coming soon.

Fortunately, there was plenty on show at IFA 2009 to get excited about although not everyone has been as forthcoming with their developments. So, if you're planning on being an early adopter, here's a little run down of who might be the best to look out for:

This is a concise, informative and refreshing article from the point of view that the cards, good or bad for early adopters, have been laid on the table in a realistic timeframe.

Thank goodness for that as we now have time to come out of this economic downturn and start saving (or remortgaging eventually when the banks will lend money in the UK especially) for that Panasonic 50 inch 3-D TV, the obvious choice with 1080p for each eye over the next 2 to 3 years, that's how rich these TV's are going to be.

In the meantime the content, Blu-ray or TV broadcast will filter down to the mainstream. And we can always play with our joy pads or motion controllers to make us forget what we're missing TV wise. Anticipation is so exciting, isn't it?

EDIT: what a coincidence, gizmodo.com today speaks about the Panasonic 50 inch 1080 P 3-D plasma on track for 2010. I put a link to the article in the MTBS user contributed section today.

Yeah, not a bad run down at all. Nice to see some serious players stepping into the field (although it is interesting the the pioneers like Sharp, Phillips and Samsung are laying low at the moment). Also, why no mention of Mitsubishi when they are like the only company to have non-EOL 3D displays available on the market? Also, they forgot JVC.
