Gameworld: Hollywood sends 3D home -- in videogames
By John Gaudiosi

RALEIGH, North Carolina, July 9 (Reuters Life!) - Coming to a living room near you -- 3D videogames.

A spate of summer blockbuster movies like Disney/Pixar's (DIS.N) "Up," 20th Century Fox's (VIAb.N)"Ice Age: Dawn of Dinosaurs" and the upcoming Disney "G-Force" movie have introduced moviegoers to the latest stereoscopic 3D technology.

Now videogames are following suit, with moves to bring the third dimension home as some of the biggest names in Hollywood work on 3D videogames expanding on the stories of their 3D films.

Disney Interactive Studios' "G-Force" game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, based on Jerry Bruckheimer's live action 3D film featuring secret agent guinea pigs, will use Anaglyph 3D, the traditional red and blue glasses from the 1950s 3D craze.

Disney is using this same technology on a Wii game due out in fall, "Disney/Pixar's Toy Story Midway Mania," which is based on the Walt Disney World and Disneyland 4D theme park ride and comes out alongside the movie "Toy Story 3D" in October.

Pushing 3D technology even further, Ubisoft (UBIP.PA) has developed proprietary stereoscopic 3D technology -- the clear polarized glasses movie theater patrons receive these days -- for "James Cameron's Avatar" game.

They've been doing 4D for years, everytime you go to the cinema and watch a bad movie do you not notice time slows down? :D

It would be great if movies were made with a "machinima" script for a game engine. You watch the movie by loading the script/models etc into an engine which then renders the movie. Both 2d-viewers as well as 3d-viewers will be able to watch. Besides: The stereosettings for 3d-viewers can be adjusted as well! 8)
It should be very easy to implement in "Pixar-type" movies.

Well... one can dream right? :shutter

the big problem with machinima movies is that the graphics will be that of video games as well- holywood movies offer superior graphics that requires hugre renderfarms to render
Oculus Rift / 3d Sucks - 2D FTW!!!

Hey, yeah, that would make it possible to do the thing I always wanted - the ability to mix-&-match your films...
I imagined a sort of fancy DVD player that you can put several discs into at once. So like if you were to put Top Gun and Top Cat into it at the same time, you'd be watching a sort of Top-Gun-Top-Cat hybrid movie. The possibilities are endless!

You know, that reminds me of this thing I always wanted: a light gun peripheral that could kill movie/tv characters in real-time. Imagine watching Titanic and at the part where DiCaprio is just about to kiss Kate Winslet... wait for it... BOOM HEADSHOT!! Muhuhahaahahahahahahaahahah!!!!

well, it is rather public. They announced it last year at the UBI days, and they confirmed about 1-2 months ago. A game made for Avatar, for Xbox360/Ps3, stereoscopic support.

Thats true, but what does that even mean? There aren't any tvs with the sensio chip available so how are people going to play the game? And that doesn't explain how it supposedly works with polarized glasses either. A lot of question marks here.

nonono. Sensio has more than just the chip. They also have formats... This simply means that UBI is still trying to find the proper format for the content. In which I can only say 'join the club'.
