Hi all. I was a big fan of Dead Rising 2, it had proper 3DVision support and looked great. I use Windows 7, and have SLI nvidia gtx 560 cards.

Dead Rising 3 came out the other day so I got it on Steam. Unfortunately, it initially looks really bad in 3DVision and doesn't work properly with SLI. However with a few adjustments it comes out quite reasonable. I got these settings by a mixture of reading online and experimentation.

Note that a few of people have reported issues and crashes. I'm using the recommended driver, 335.23, and haven't had any problems.

First up, "real stereo" won't work. But "fake stereo" works really well. The trick with fake stereo is to put your convergence down to the lowest possible, and put 3d up full. Any convergence makes the blur around the edges of things look really bad, but without convergence it really looks quite good.

To get "Fake 3D" working, use NVidia Inspector to change the profile to Assasins Creed IV: Black Flag (SP).

To get SLI working, change SLI Compatibility Bits (DX1x) to 0x00000004 (Need For Speed: The Run etc). I've seen the one for Batman Arkham Origins suggested, but this gave me buggy shadows.

NVIDIA predefined SLI mode on Dx10 should be SLI_PREDEFINED_MODE_FORCE_AFR

NVIDIA Predefined number GPUS to use on SLI Rendering should be SLI_PREDEFINED_GPU_COUNT_FOUR

This setup seems to work for me and looks pretty good so far. Only problem is some gui things get messed up by the fake 3d but it's tolerable.

Thanks for the guide.

I heard the devs capped the frames at 30fps, which is disappointing. I'll pass on the game just because of that.

They had it capped on initial release, but gave the option of uncapping it via an .ini file. They warned that it might get weird, but since then they've backpedaled and said it should be fine.

But actually, you'd have to have a damn fine beast of machine to get it running at 60 fps. It's an incredibly demanding game, system wise. If you're the kind of person who insists on 60 fps at 1080p then you are going to need a killer gaming rig.

My own rig is many years old, and only just barely within the specs. I'm not that fussed about resolution and frame rates too much, I'm running it at 720p with a lot of the settings on low, and my machine still struggles with it. I'd hate to think what the framerate is dropping to in some of the zombie-heavy scenes, I'm guessing it may even hit the teens sometimes.

That probably sounds off-putting, but the reason for this is that the game is pretty huge. You can see vast areas of the city swarming with zombies. Lots of zombies. Lots and lots of zombies. I guess they thought they could either make a game that ran at 60fps 1080p on your typical "couple of years old" rig, or they could go for something epic. I'm glad they went the epic path.

Even though I'm playing at lower graphics settings, 720p, and probably dropping below 30 fps regularly, it still looks really good and is really fun to play. I'm having a great time.

Regarding the tweaks I gave above, a few updates.
Occasionally when I start the game (it's happened twice) it doesn't work properly and I get messed up flickering and juddering, like the sync between the sli cards is messed up or something. I have found that if I shut the game down and restart it again, everything is fine.

Also maybe I was too extreme in saying get rid of all convergence. I've since found I can add a little convergence for better depth without the "fake 3d" edge glitching being too annoying. It's realy a matter of taste, I think after a while I tune it out. I don't go too high, but a little works well. I think a game like this, where you character is out in the forground a bit, works ok with "fake 3d."

Quick update, pretty happy with the stereoscopic performance of the game, albeit in fake stereo mode.

I've since read the game is not optimized for SLI, so now I have SLI disabled for this game. Framerate seems about the same.

Also occasionally on startup I get the flickering or stereo fails completely, as mentioned already, but sometimes it keeps doing that restart after restart. I've since found that alt-tabbing out of the game and then coming back again fixes the issue.

Updated my graphics card and nvidia drivers. 347.88 automatically runs Dead Rising 3 in "compatiblity mode" (fake 3D) so there's no need for any of the above changes anymore.
