Hybrid Walking device [Alpha UPDATE 08/02/2016]

Hi guys,

I will start a project to build a walking input device for controlling FPS game in front of a TV or with HMD ( oculus , morpheus, samsung gear ...).
The parts that compose the device is a unicycle saddle, gas spring, ball bearing mechanism for 360 °, and support stufs.
Electronique part for the prototype will be modified joypad or nunchuk connected to contact on the bottom of the seat.
Seat will act as joystick so you need to move your hips to controll it.

I need your comment to tell me what a such device must be able to do, so i will put a list of what the device must be :

- Compatible by playing in front of a screen ( no 360° support) or with a hmd ( with 360° support).
- Be able to crouch and prone.
- Be able to move in crouch poistion or in prone position.
- Be able to play with Joystick to fly and joystick drive car.
- Be able to lean left and right.

Happy to see a comment :)
I give you some details about source and inspiration i use for this project.
First :
Pointman seated interface for ramy training

Fourth :
A wiimote configured with glovepie for the weapon for pc version.

The space navigator is working fine in fps game i have tested and can configure sensitivity and how much i must press to detect the bind.
Now i will configure my wiimote to work on my pc for aiming and after this i will work on the seat design to be able to put the spacenavigator under the seat and build a box to receive the space navigator.
The seat need to have same movement as the SN (spacenav) but with restriction to avoid of breaking the device.
So the first version of the seat is a standing seat, you are not sitting you are standing but you have a saddle for controlling movement.
By pushing my hips forward : i walk, by pushing forward and pushing down the seat (the bind is forward ("w") + hold run key ( "ctrl" in bf4) i run, by stopping pushing down i walk again because Spacenav detect a upward move and it is binded to release "ctrl" key.
The seat can turn 360 °, but for playing in front of a screen i will block it to avoid 360 ° i will make the seat (not the axe of the seat ) be able to turn 2°. So a small rotation left is binded to the key left arrow right for right. ( not strafe)

Second phase of the project consit of crouch and prone.
Crouching will be a sitting position like when you are sitting on a chair, so chair can slide down and he return up with the force of a gas spring.
I have thinking about a prone posistion....... I have tryed to prone on the floor and simulate to aiming with a wiimote gun.
It is not a verry comfortable position to play, so i realise that we can stay in the crouch position ( sitting) and have a tablet in front of us to be able to prone see image below.

But not sitting like him, the leg must be back and the table a little more forward.
To move in this position, i will put a second space navigator under the tablet.
To detect crouche and prone position i will use maybe a kinect.

Hi, I have ideas on my own about what you are trying to achieve. I think the most accessible alternatives are a wii balance board (maybe modified slightly) for the leaning and ceiling-mounted camera with freetrack and inverted axes in GlovePIE/FreePIE for 6 dof tracking.

Hi guys,

Since last post i was working on my prototype !

So i present you : VRMOTION

So this is a quick sketchup concept design.
The device is composed with :
  • Unicycle seat
    A main base made with a Bar Stool
    A back seat
    A support for laptop or desktop or Game console attached to the back seat.
HOW IT WORK ?
A joystick is placed under the unicycle seat, so the seat can move forward /backward/left/right. (slide movement limited by the joystick travel)
Your are in standing position so you need to use your hipe to move the seat.
You can rotate 360 ° on your self ( tracking the rotation of the body not yet implemented, only the rotation of the head using headset gyro.
You can be safe with the help of the back seat, so cannot fall during game.

So this is a proof of concept prototype, i will put online video after 19 fébruary 2016 when i will demo it during the BE.VR meetup.
