To watch DVD/bluray movies in the rift we need to engineer a "Virtual Movie Theater."

The name of the software could be called, "Rift 3D Bluray Virtual Movie Theater."

After inserting a 3D Bluray into your computer you will enter into a vitural theator. You will be able to walk around much like any other FPS.
Pretty much what they have in the Playstation Home, for example:

The movies will be in 3D, and all your Bluray players functinaly will show up on virtural remote in your vitral hand. You can click the buttons with your mouse.

The software will render the video and vitual theater correctly for Rifts lenses.

I understand Rift isn't ment for movies, but everyone wants movies and such a theator would make it possible.

You beat me to it!

I was going to link to that thread and warn the guy about you possibly strangling him.

It's too clean looking. You need popcorn on the floor, bubblegum on the seats, and an obnoxious jerk who talks during the entire film.

I was thinking about this too. Given you are looking around in virtual space, you could have a screen size as large as IMAX (but video quality would probably be poor). I was thinking about doing this with Qt OpenGL. I think they have a nice widget where you can basically draw videos onto almost any 2d or 3d surface.

Namielus, is that a screenshot of your app? If so, very cool.

Actually, you probably would want a big screen with the Rift because of the low resolution of the display. The resolution of the virtual movie screen you are looking at is going to be less of an issue.

Yes its from my app, but I need lots of help getting it to work.
Im probably going to hire a freelancer, when I finally decide what engine to go with.

Unity is limited to streaming only ogg video files. Obviously the more you can stream as a texture the better.
Imagine even having youtube/web streaming support etc.

Two things you might want to consider, if you didn't already have

You could move the screen closer to the first row. Most theatres have the same.. and it gives you the option of viewing the screen a bit closer which gives it a relatively higher resolution.

And second, there is a thread on this forum about cropping for the view-overlap
viewtopic.php?f=140&t=15247&hilit=cut&start=465#p82744
That might also work to increase the usage of the screen

thanks for posting a link to your thread, sorry I didn't see it.

Key issue in getting this to work is to be sure it can re-render on the fly content from your bluray drive. That might be very hard.

Also it would be cool if you could just mirror your computer desktop. So then you could watch streaming content from amazon video / netflix / hulu / youtube or any local content including or normal dvd-playback software.

If you focused on just mirroring you computer desktop, you would not have worry creating a video player.

I use slingbox/slingplayer for TV, and if you mirrored my desktop I could watch tv in my glasses.

Would that screen support 3D video?

In unity 4, yes, but I wont know what engine/platform to use until I gather enough money to hire freelancers
to help me.
I am going to hire someone soon.

Would it be difficult to split your 3D video into it's component eye images, then render the scene as is, just masking the opposing eye image when you pass it though for the final render for each eye?

*sigh* That seems like a 'do it in a custom engine' thing. So happy that everything I want to do with the rift I can (so far) do in the UDK.

Actually, if they are using Unity Pro to Render the stream to texture, then it should be very easy.

Depending on how the Rift works within Unity (assuming one camera per eye), you can group polygonal objects into layers and have cameras ignore the rendering of certain layers.

Basically all you'd really need to do is either...
Run two streams on two screens simultaneously, grouping them in left or right eye layers.
or
Run 1 stream to two screens, but UV map the different screens so that a side-by-side 3D video is either left aligned or right aligned, and cut off at the midpoint... then just do the layer thing above.
