Plausible? Could this be easily implemented?

Google earth support would be awesome. I tried this with my vuzix vr920 hmd, and it is very cool to fly over the surface of mars using the spacenavigator 3D mouse.

Hehe, now they have to redo the entire trip they already made, but now with HD 3D cams instead!

I believe the multiple cameras does have some overlap, so it should have at least some stereoscopic information there in the raw data. Even without that, since you can turn 360 degrees at so many angles in relation to most buildings, and keep moving forward to get multiple views, I imagine the right software would be able to generate some kind of point cloud and make a pretty decent 2.5D or 3D emulation.

If that still doesn't work things aren't really so terrible in 2D anyway, in a HMD. Not so terrible that I wouldn't want to even have the support in Google Streetview.

well, i guess it'd be a really sickening experience to use the oculus rift with google streetview, due to it's not smooth moves, but sudden drastic shifts.
though google earth or something like that might work ?

does anyone have an idea how one would have to convert the google-earth-data into oculus-rift-format ?

regards, malicor

I am confused, there is this project http://oculusstreetview.eu.pn But you still look for streetview implementation. Do you have something different in mind?

I've always said that it was terribly short-sighted for a company like Google to forgo the use of 3D cameras in such a huge operation.

I was referring to his later statement:
"OmniAtlas
