In the distance, the image is separate with the red as the left eye, and the blue as the right eye - this is how your brain registers depth inside the screen. In the movie, when you walk to the staircase, the images overlap and cross over. With objects up close, everything is opposite, and the blue is seen in the left eye, and the red is seen in the right eye. This is how the "pop-out" effect is created. Increasing "separation" determines how much depth you have to work with. "Convergence" adjusts how much of this depth pops out of the screen, and how much sinks into the screen.
