Virtual reality moves past gaming to sell travel destinations, hotels

The Oculus Rift and other virtual reality devices will soon be used to promote hotels and places like British Columbia. Agencies including Destination BC will immerse travelers into virtual realities that emulate the place they want to visit.

Virtual reality is no longer exclusive to gaming. Devices such as the Oculus Rift are now being used by tourism agencies and hotels to help travelers preview their desired destinations.

Destination British Columbia is one of the first travel agencies in North America to introduce a virtual reality experience to consumers. It invested some $500,000 to create a virtual reality production called “The Wild Within VR Experience,” which takes consumers on a coastal adventure and a trek into the rainforest.
