3D technology: How it spread in 2010

As with all things Avatar, James Cameron pushed 3D technology to a new zenith in 2010. So much so, that it is our Entertainer of the Year.
It is not just the staggering box office Avatar generated, although that is impressive enough. It is not even that the Avatar experience has once again made going to the movies more of a special event. Instead, movies are just one part of a rapidly expanding 3D scene that is also being driven by video gamers and sports events.
Gamers are tech-savvy. 3D can be sensational for their purposes. As for sports, select events are being telecast in 3D in Canada, the U.S. and abroad. Even Hockey Night in Canada is getting into the act with two NHL games involving the Montreal Canadiens. One 3D game occurred Dec. 11 with the Toronto Maple Leafs as hosts. The second is scheduled for Feb. 20, with Montreal visiting the Calgary Flames for the Heritage Classic in McMahon Stadium.
