Sky 3D: The next big thing?

Sky’s dedicated 3D channel launches on Friday, and it could spark a new ‘gold rush’ for rival broadcasters and the wider consumer electronics industry – but will consumers be prepared to pay?

Golf fans are getting ready to experience the Ryder Cup in a whole new way this weekend. Tomorrow, Sky launches Europe’s first 3D TV channel, in time for the opening day of the tournament.

The 3D technology may have been around for years, but, until now, it had yet to break out of specialist cinemas and into the living room. Sky is hoping to change that, and over the past 18 months has invested a considerable amount in the 3D filming of sports, cultural events and documentaries.
