Electronic expo themes: 3-D games, networking

LOS ANGELES — New, easier control schemes to get players up and moving aren’t the only method being deployed by game makers to expand the scope of their creations. Other themes at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game industry’s largest showcase, include 3-D games and increased integration of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

“If you add social networking … to 3-D and more friendly or approachable interactions, it’s an even richer environment for the consumer, and they are fabulous tools for the artists, engineers and the creative side of our industry,” says Michael Gallagher, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, a trade group that operates the annual expo. “It shows that the video game industry is where it’s at for the cutting edge of entertainment. That is the trend of the future.”
