3D HDTV coming soon
by Tom Katsiroubas

You may have heard. 3D HDTV is coming this summer to an electronics store near you. All the major manufactures will have a set to sell and their marketing engines will be in full force to convince you that you can’t do without one.

You will have to decide, is it worth paying the premium price for 3D? Or is this just a novelty that still isn’t ready for prime time?

A 3D HDTV can play 3D high-definition movies, TV shows and video games. It can also play the high-definition 2D content you get on current HDTV sets. To see 3D, you will need to wear 3D glasses that come with the set. You will also need a 3D Blu-ray player to watch 3D movies. And you will need 3D channels from your programming provider to watch TV in 3D.

How good is it?

When I saw HD 3D recently, I was blown away.

It was on a 100-inch, 3D plasma set from Panasonic. It was unlike any 3D I have seen in a theatre.

The demo included several movie trailers, such as Avatar and A Christmas Carol, as well as auto-racing scenes and replays from the last World Cup of soccer.

Some images seemed to float or pop off the screen. But something was different. You could see behind and around images with the same high-definition clarity as the image in front of you. This made it look that much more real. It was the best 3D I have ever seen. It had me wanting more.
