Sony talks 2010, competing with Natal and Wii, and more
by Matt FurtadoWe were recently given the opportunity to ask John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, SCEA some questions about the upcoming year. We talk about upcoming games for the Sony motion controller, what kind of support it`ll have from Sony and third-party developers, the titles it`ll see, and, of course, how will this new device differ from what Microsoft hopes to offer with Project Natal and will it provide an experience that much different from the Nintendo Wii.
1. Sony will be releasing their motion-based controller dubbed the ‘Wand’ in early 2010. We have only seen a limited amount of games from Sony that will utilize this new controller option. What kind of games will we see from Sony that uses this new controller? Will there be a focus on shooters and sports titles?
John Koller: Let me start by clarifying that the Motion Controller is not a “wand.” The new Motion Controller, with high-precision sensor, is designed for new and innovative gameplay experiences and will go well together with any games across all genres from casual to core. With the introduction of this new controller, SCE, with the support from 3rd party developers and publishers, will offer users with a richer gaming experience only possible on PS3. In terms of software, first and third party software title development for the Motion Controller is well underway. We decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we’ll be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles, allowing users to choose from a broader line-up of software titles at launch.
