It’s rare that a science fiction film doesn’t feature a scene with some sort of sporting event being played out on 3D TV, with fuzzy little blue homunculi kicking a ball around or (more commonly) beheading one another.

We’re used to sci-fi disappointment: The flying car, Moon hotel and roast dinner in a pill seem no closer to reality than they were at the dawn of the Atomic Age. 3D TV, though, might be a different matter.

Sky TV, the satellite operator 39.1 per cent owned by News Corporation, parent company of The Times, is currently trialling a new 3D outside broadcast system that will bring little three-dimensional football games to your television, bridging the gap between real life and Subbuteo.
