Ubisoft's Star Trek: Bridge Crew Goes Next Gen!

Star Trek: Bridge Crew with Star Trek Next Generation DLCFinally some news worth reporting on!  Star Trek: Bridge Crew, easily one of the top rated VR games, is getting some desperately needed content to refresh the simulator via a new Star Trek: The Next Generation DLC which is being made available this year on May 22 for Sony PlayStation (PSVR), and on July 21 for PC.  The PC version will support the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift platforms.

Captains and crew will get to pilot the USS Enterprize NCC-1701-D, battle cloaking Romulans, take on a new bridge position, and...perhaps most importantly...battle the Borg!  And no, they aren't Swedish.

See you guys on the bridge soon!

Lenovo's VR One-Two Punch

Lenovo Solo HMD, controller, and Lenovo Mirage camera. On the heals of Oculus' Go release, Lenovo has moved forward with their own one-two punch.  First, using Google's Worldsense tracking technology, the Lenovo Solo HMD is delivering true positional tracking in a completely wireless solution.  Next, the unit features 2560 X 1440 resolution (1280 X 1440 per eye) running at a max refresh rate of 75 Hz.  The unit also boasts a 110 degree FOV.  The Lenovo Solo is running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and is being marketed for $399 USD.

The HMD also features a 3DOF (three degree depth of field) hand controller.  This is not the same as positional tracking, so while you will be able to see all the nuances of personal movement, the controller has less flexibility.

In tandem with Lenovo's HMD is a 180 degree stereoscopic 3D camera.  In other words, this camera has two distinct lenses to capture the realism of seeing things as they were Meant to be Seen!  The camera runs $299 USD.

We got to interview Lenovo at CES 2018 earlier on in their product cycle.  Check it out!

Going to Go For the Go?

So the Oculus Go is a thing now.  This is Facebook's first foray into standalone HMDs.  Sold for $199 USD (or $249 for 64GB model), it features 2560 X 1440 resolution (1280 X 1440 per eye), about 2 hours of battery life in gaming on a single charge, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor.  The GO also includes a 3DOF (rotation-only) hand controller.

Big advantages with the GO is it doesn't require an expensive smartphone add-in - unlike its Samsung Gear VR predecessors - and Facebook has a growing library of content to go with it.  HOWEVER, it doesn't feature positional tracking which the more premium PC and console solutions have enjoyed since birth, and it is based on mobile processing technology which is a fraction of the power that drives PC and console.

As the medium is the message, we'll be interested to see which types of content ultimately succeed on this platform.  For example, there are things that will probably work very well in a mobile VR setup versus a PC or console solution simply because the nature of being mobile helps define what will ultimately be used.  Let's see what happens!
