As a follow-up to our earlier story about how the discrete graphics card market has grown, it looks like Intel is officially throwing their hat in the ring with their own AIB (add in board) products to be released as early as 2020.

Intel got some wild headline space earlier this year when they secured Raja Koduri as their Chief Architect, Senior Vice-President and General Manager for Cores & Visual Computing & Edge Computing Solutions along with Chris Hook for Discrete Graphics and Visual Technologies Marketing.  Both were previously senior executives at Advanced Micro Devices.

Sourced from Marketwatch.com, it is anticipated that Intel’s new lines of graphics cards will target cloud-based computing as well as client-level groups (e.g. PC gamers).

It’s a very juicy, gossipy situation all around.  For AMD, they are now facing a new competitor with former employees on a GPU level at a time when the two companies have already collaborated on a joint AMD / Intel based CPU called the Kaby Lake G.  Then you’ve got Nvidia which consistently does well on PC and is making strides in cloud computing and AI, but is now facing a deep pocketed blue titan in their core markets.  While there is plenty of room for everyone, 2020 is going to make for a very interesting year!
