It’s great to see some real VR news coming out of E3 Expo this year. First up is Doom VFR (we think VFR was coined by the same Doom weapons naming team that came up with the “BFG”. You figure it out.).
This looks to be a stand-alone virtual reality game in the Doom universe complete with teleportation and unique VR characteristics. It’s being promoted for the HTC Vive, though pending injunctions aside (Oooooh! That was really low!), who knows what else it could really run on if compliant with the OpenVR platform.
Doom VFR is slated for sometime in 2017.
Next up is Fallout 4 VR which is…Fallout 4 in VR! Not just the inspiring version Vireio Perception released oh so long ago. This is the fully engineered stuff with actual object interactions, native room scale support, and all the adrenalin pumping fun of the original.
What is unique about Fallout 4 compared to nearly every other VR game release is it has a pre-existing fan base. In addition to appealing to the current VR user base, it would be very cool if existing Fallout 4 players amped up their game to get to the VR level. The catch is that now that the game is later in the product life cycle, it will be interesting to see if there are fresh game storylines and content to renew that interest.
2017 is the magic year for Fallout 4 VR as well (October, 2017).
