At CES 2013, we got a private invite for AMD’s press conference. While the event ran significantly longer, we decided to showcase the excerpts focused on their GPU division, and some cool software being bundled with their new round of APUs – especially the gesture control which looks very cool!
While AMD has been going through a proverbial fight for their life, they have nicely positioned themselves for a strong rebound. While not discussed at their press conference, they are already the GPU of choice in Nintendo’s Wii-U, and it’s highly anticipated that their graphics tech will be in the XBOX 720 and Sony PS4 as well. To our knowledge, it has been a long time since the entire console market has been dominated by a single GPU manufacturer (has it ever?).
At CES, we got to sample their CiiNOW cloud gaming initiative (AMD is a CiiNOW investor). It’s too early to say how good or not good this effort will be, but it struck us as being very low latency when we tried it in AMD’s exhibit.
We will have more to share from the AMD camp in a few days. Much more CES coverage to come.
