AMD Adding HD3D CrossFireX Support (Updated!)

Some exciting news on the AMD front.  For years (yes, years), AMD GPUs have been hindered by an inability to do CrossFireX or multi-GPU processing in stereoscopic 3D mode.  While single GPU options work well, adding an extra unit is a cheap way to upgrade, and on paper, an extra GPU should compensate for the performance lost by having to double-render each frame in stereoscopic 3D mode.

AMD's latest preview driver is promoting HD3D compatibility with CrossFireX.  We don't yet have a dual-GPU option to benchmark with, but this should theoretically work with AMD's native 3D support option, and hopefully, their third party driver partners including DDD and IZ3D.  We will do some digging to get more information - but if this works out, it really balances out the support features of the red and green teams.

AMD has also added 30Hz support for 1080P 3D mode, and have preemptively added support for their upcoming 7000 series GPUs.

EDIT: We got in touch with AMD, and sure enough, HD3D CrossFireX is intended to be fully compatible with DDD TriDef Ignition drivers.  There are some bugs being worked out with certain HD3D titles, but S-3D gamers are encouraged to give these pre-release drivers a try!
