One of the big trends in stereoscopic 3D are the announcements (not the availability, the ANNOUNCEMENTS) of glasses-free 3D HDTVs. Samsung is the latest on the list with a 55″ unit featuring 1080P resolution. According to trustedreviews.com, it’s expected to be released in about three years.

The television features nine sweet spots for 3D viewing, and is based on two independent LCD panels. The first panel displays a unique image to the left and right eye for the glasses-free 3D effect. The second panel on top adjusts the optical refraction index according to whether you want to watch TV in 2D or stereoscopic 3D.
Before holding off on your next 3D purchase, there are some unknowns. There may be some big trade-offs for glasses-free capabilities including actual display resolution for each eye, viewing position flexibility, ability for multiple people to view at different angles at the same time, cost, and more.
