LG's Hit & Miss in Mobile 3D Gaming + MasterImage 3D

As expected, it looks like the mobile 3D market is heating up.  The Internet is buzzing with LG's Optimus 3D Handset featuring parallax barrier auto-stereoscopic 3D support.  However, what caught our eye is it comes bundled with several 3D games and is already being compared to the yet to be released Nintendo 3DS.

LG Optimus 3D Smartphone

Gameloft (a subsidiary of 3D-friendly Ubisoft) has bundled three games with the smart phone including Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Let's Golf 2 and N.O.V.A.  Gameloft is the same company responsible for Panasonic's upcoming 3D titles on their Viera Connect broadband service included with their 3D HDTVs.  The Telegraph gave a great up-close and personal review of the games - nicely done!

LG Optimus Tablet

Unfortunately, LG's Optimus Tablet seems like a half-effort release.  They include plenty of Nvidia Tegra 2 horsepower, a stereoscopic 3D camera, and a 720P touch screen...but where's the 3D display?!?  Having sampled I-Station's polarized 3D tablet at CES 2011, LG gave up a huge advantage by offering the 3D camera but not letting users enjoy the content on the go.  Polarized glasses are just too easy to carry.

That said, while LG has won the headline space this week from Mobile World Congress, this is just the calm before the storm.  MasterImage 3D continues to demonstrate their auto-stereo 3D technology (OEM) with updated Crysis 2 footage and 3D gaming content samples from S3DGA's members.  If the implementation costs for auto-stereoscopic 3D or polarized 3D solutions prove to be affordable and attainable in the mobile markets, this could be an excellent driver for S-3D gaming long-term.
