3D HDTV Sales Projections, 3D HDTV Mall Tour

Panasonic 3D HDTV

Our friends at Jon Peddie Research forwarded this article to us.  It's a very interesting summary of the technologies used to make stereoscopic 3D displays possible, and efforts taken to improve brightness and limit crosstalk.  It shares some exciting statistics as well:
  • Samsung has sold 600,000 3D HDTV units as of June, 2010
  • Samsung's 3D premium is only $300 above the 2D counterpart of the same quality.
  • Panasonic's 3D HDTV sales account for 40% of units sized 50" or greater.
Minimum 2010 sales targets are:
  • 2.5 million units for Sony
  • 2.0 million for Samsung
  • 1.0 million apiece for Panasonic and LG
Speaking of 3D HDTVs, Panasonic is kicking off a 3DTV mall tour.  We mention this because MTBS has been doing its share of secret holiday shopping this week, and as we originally feared, only one display manufacturer has S-3D gaming content on display.  This really sucks!

So for those looking to see what 3D HDTVs are REALLY capable of, there is some hope.  "The Unwrap 3D Tour" will showcase Panasonic's 3D HDTV selection, and in addition to 3D broadcasting and Blu-Ray material, they will be showing S-3D gaming on PC with Nvidia's 3DTV Play software.  This isn't an endorsement of Panasonic in particular, it's just a great opportunity to see what 3D HDTVs can deliver with the right content.  Each week features seven simultaneous demonstrations in popular city malls.  Here is the schedule:

Week 1, December 1st to 5th:

New York, Roosevelt Field -- Garden City, N.Y.
Philadelphia, King of Prussia Mall -- King of Prussia, Pa.
Atlanta,Perimeter Mall -- Atlanta
Chicago, The Shops at North Bridge -- Chicago
Dallas, Stonebriar Centre -- Frisco, Texas
Los Angeles, Topanga -- Canoga Park, Calif.
San Francisco, San Francisco Centre -- San Francisco

Week 2, December 8th to 12th:

Boston, South Shore Plaza -- Braintree, Mass.
Washington, DC, Tysons Corner Center -- McLean, Va.
Miami, Miami International Mall -- Miami
Minneapolis, Mall of America -- Bloomington, Minn.
Houston, The Galleria -- Houston
Phoenix, Chandler Fashion Center -- Chandler, Ariz.
Seattle, Northgate Mall -- Seattle
