3D Entertainment Summit, Jeffrey Katzenberg (UPDATED!)

MTBS just got back from the 3D Entertainment Summit!  If pundits and consumers are concerned that the 3D industry is slowing down, there was no evidence of that here.  This year marked a record attendance with estimates ranging from 600 to 800 executives.

We were very pleased to see fellow speakers talking about the challenges facing stereoscopic 3D entertainment.  Instead of just promoting their own wares, there was a real openness to talk about the challenges and solutions moving forward.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of Dreamworks Animation

It was a relief to see that MTBS isn't alone in its concerns about the negative media coverage of stereoscopic 3D entertainment.  Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of Dreamworks Animation,  took the time to share some of the leading criticisms against 3D by media and Hollywood alike.  Taking the bull by the horns, he compared this disconnect to that of the early days of color and sound.

Q&A with Jeffrey Katzenberg
(FWD to time index 17:27 for S-3D Gaming Discussion)

After a little MTBS coaxing, Katzenberg even gave kudos to stereoscopic 3D gaming and gave mention to some work being done by Blizzard/Activision.  A little side story is that every year Katzenberg has presented at the 3D Entertainment Summit, he has remarked that 3D in the home will be driven by gaming.  Unfortunately, this bombshell remark spoken in a room full of broadcasting executives tends to go unnoticed.  While he was more indirect (though equally positive) this year, maybe someone will take notice?

We will have more to share in the coming days including a few interviews and some great 3D pictures from the conference.
