The History of Stereoscopic 3D Gaming

While stereoscopic 3D gaming has (finally!) been earning the headlines it deserves, most are surprised to learn that it has a tenured history that spans more than a decade (more than twenty years in some cases)!  Over the course of months, MTBS-TV has been putting together an up close and personal walk-through of how stereoscopic 3D gaming came to be.  Its successes, failures, and controversial politics are all rolled together in this series of ten minute videos.

MTBS-TV is personally recorded and broadcast by Neil Schneider, President & CEO of Meant to be Seen and Executive Director of the non-profit S-3D Gaming Alliance.

An added bonus is all the videos are recorded in stereoscopic 3D!  The majority of stereoscopic 3D displays will work with YouTube 3D's standard applet.  Here are the exceptions:

iZ3D monitor users will need to have the iZ3D driver resident and play in full screen mode.  If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, it may be necessary to turn off the Aero features of the operating system.

Nvidia's GeForce 3D Vision users need to first download the videos from YouTube, and play them locally with their Nvidia movie player in side by side format.  The videos can be downloaded with a YouTube plug-in for Firefox.

Click on the individual YouTube links with each video to see the stereoscopic 3D options applet.

Part I: The Invention of Modern S-3D Gaming

Setting the foundation for an exciting industry, stereoscopic 3D gaming began with a problem.  Learn how DDD, iZ3D, and Nvidia got their early starts in S-3D gaming.

Part II: The Most Controversial Year in Stereoscopic 3D Gaming

2008 was the year that angered just about every stereoscopic 3D gamer on a global level.  It was also the year that market players dug in their heels and defined their niche.  Find out how!

Part III: Nvidia Gets in the Ring...Again.

When Nvidia's GeForce 3D Vision got introduced to the world, a new dynamic hit the S-3D PC Gaming Industry.  Find out what Nvidia did right, and what the ramifications are moving forward in stereoscopic 3D PC gaming.

Part IV: Early Stereoscopic 3D Console Gaming

Sure! Stereoscopic 3D gaming on PS3, XBOX 360, and Nintendo 3DS is going to be really cool! Would you believe that all these consoles owe their 3D roots to gaming technology that dates back over twenty years? Learn about the first experiments in stereoscopic 3D console gaming and the lessons learned. Keep watching this series, because console is just as controversial as S-3D PC gaming. You'll see!

Part V: Modern Stereoscopic 3D Gaming on Console

Stereoscopic 3D gaming on console is finally getting the attention it deserves.  Find out how a little foot in mouth disease got the ball rolling on a whole new class of video games.  This segment features everyone including Blitz Games Studios, Epic Games, Ubisoft, Sony, Xbox, and more.

Part VI: History Ends, But the Story Continues!

So we reach the end of our tail about the history of stereoscopic 3D gaming.  Not the end, really...more of a real industry beginning.  Neil Schneider shares a personal history on how The S-3D Gaming Alliance were founded, why it was formed, and looking back at the past three years, what the challenges are moving forward.  How is the gaming world so different from Blu-Ray?  Find out!

Thank you all for watching this series!  We hope you enjoyed it.
