S3DGA Finds Competitive 3D HDTV Pricing is Good for 3D Adoption

U-Decide Initiative 2010 Report Reveals 3D HDTV Pricing is in Line With Consumer Demand

Toronto, Ontario (December 23rd, 2010) – The U-Decide Initiative is an industry wide effort to survey console and PC gamers to determine what customers want, which gaming experiences will ultimately sell, and what the near future buying patterns will be.  U-Decide 2010 was made possible by The S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA), Panasonic, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Steelseries, Zalman, Blitz Games Studios, Computer Power User, and Meant to be Seen.

Industry Backed Study Reveals Gamer Viewpoints on Stereoscopic 3D

Glasses and Additional HDTV Purchases are A-Ok According to Potential 3D Gaming Customers

Toronto, Ontario (October 18, 2010) – The U-Decide Initiative is an industry wide effort to survey console and PC gamers to determine what customers want, which gaming experiences will ultimately sell, and what the near future buying patterns will be. U-Decide 2010 was made possible by The S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA), Panasonic, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Steelseries, Zalman, Blitz Games Studios, Computer Power User, and Meant to be Seen.

"According to the Entertainment Software Association, over 50% of adults play video games. U-Decide 2010 provides a laser focus on this influential consumer market space," said Neil Schneider, Executive Director of The S-3D Gaming Alliance.

Glasses VS No Glasses According to Content Type

U-Decide 2010 had nearly 1,200 respondents. 735 traditional non-stereoscopic gamers that don't yet own 3D equipment (only 2D), and 434 experienced stereoscopic 3D gamers that do. These preliminary results are 100% based on the 2D group to prevent skewing:
  • 80% of gamers are willing to wear glasses to play video games and watch 3D Blu-Ray movies. When glasses are no longer necessary, the participation level only climbs about 12% in both content categories.
  • 36% of gamers are open to watching 3D sports, and 20% are willing to watch 3D broadcasting if glasses are required. When glasses are no longer necessary, the willingness level climbs to 63% for sports and 61% for traditional broadcasting. The full report will determine how actual 3D experience impacts these figures.
  • 65% of the sample already own an HDTV, with over 35% of them looking to buy a 3D HDTV within the next two years.
"If you are concerned about the impact Stereovision-3D is having on the gaming market, then you should check out U-Decide’s latest findings, and consider becoming a supporting S3DGA member,” said Dr. Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research.

Additional facts about The U-Decide Initiative:
  • This is a tiny portion of the data collected. The full report will be released in November 2010.
  • Preliminary results shown at GDC Online to launch 3D Stereoscopic Games Summit.
  • About 75% of respondents are based in North America, 15% are from Europe, and the remaining 10% span the world.
  • Features a diverse sample of console and PC gamers.
Non-stereoscopic and experienced 3D gamers were surveyed separately with customized questioning to reflect their experience and unique perspectives. To date, U-Decide is the only study that has effectively done this. Subjects covered in the full report include:
  • Breakdown of console and PC demographics and current spending patterns.
  • Nature of gamers and their interest level in 3D technology.
  • Amounts gamers are willing to spend on 3D display equipment and software.
  • Sales expectations for 3D HDTVs, computer displays, notebooks, mobile solutions, and more.
  • Analysis of stereoscopic 3D gaming demonstrations and which are most effective according to customers.
  • Obstacles preventing 3D hardware purchases according to display type.
  • Purchase plans for 3D HDTVs, notebooks, displays, HMDs, and mobile solutions (e.g. Nintendo 3DS, cell phones, etc.).
  • Demand level for 3D with different video game classes, and which 3D experiences gamers are looking for.
  • Consumer satisfaction with leading brands and classes of 3D displays and software.
  • Gamer interest in alternative content in 3D movie theaters.
  • And much more!
Qualified S-3D Gaming Alliance members will receive the full report for free. Non-members can receive a 20% discount on condition that the report is purchased prior to release on or before November 15th, 2010. Non-members please contact Neil Schneider for purchase details.

S3DGA and Top Gaming Companies Join Forces on the Largest Study of What Gamers Want, 50 Prizes

Panasonic, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Blitz Games Studios, Steelseries, Zalman, Meant to be Seen, Computer Power User, and The S-3D Gaming Alliance Create Consumer Survey

Toronto, Ontario (July 7, 2010) – Leading display manufacturers and game developers are committed to stereoscopic 3D gaming, and a crucial piece of the 3D puzzle is having a firm grasp of what customers want, and which experiences will ultimately sell.  The U-Decide Initiative is an industry-wide effort to survey PC and console gamers around the world to find out more about the consumer perspective. The survey opens today and ends October 1st, 2010.

“Panasonic supports this effort to tie consumers to 3D technology.  That’s why we joined The S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA), and we are adding a Panasonic 3D HDTV as the grand prize.  Reviewers say it’s the best 3D HDTV out there, and we think gamers will be excited by this,” said James Mercs, Managing Director of Panasonic Hollywood Labs.

Once the study ends, a drawing for over 50 great prizes will be held. Respondents could win a Panasonic 3D HDTV, a Zalman FullHD 21.5 inch 3D Monitor, quality gaming headsets by Steelseries, and over 40 PC and console games by Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Blitz Games Studios.

“Electronic Arts is a founding sponsor of U-Decide, and we hope gamers will enjoy the 25 titles we are adding to the drawing for PC and consoles.  We anticipate hearing what gamers have to say about stereoscopic 3D gaming, and the products they are most excited about,” said Alan Price, Chief Technical Officer for Electronic Arts Canada.

The survey is multiple choice and only takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete.  Interested gamers should visit S3DGA’s consumer arm Meant to be Seen at http://www.mtbs3d.com and select U-Decide from the top menu.  While Meant to be Seen registration is required, it is both free and instantaneous.

MTBS' 3D Game Analyzer (M3GA) Launches With 100 Games Tested in 3D

Customers Grade Stereoscopic 3D Games for Compatibility and Quality of Play

Toronto, Ontario (June 14, 2010) – Meant to be Seen (MTBS), the world's first and only stereoscopic 3D Certification and Advocacy group with the help of gamers around the world, has launched the MTBS 3D Game Analyzer (M3GA) today.  M3GA is a PC video game database that will inform consumers about how to play their favorite game titles on nearly all the available 3D solutions.

“Based on game developer feedback, the potential behind this is huge.  We plan to submit the scoring and mechanism to S3DGA, and leave it to the gaming industry to jointly define the quality expectations and ratify them for official use.   Customers want marketing-free game testing, and M3GA was the first logical step,” said Neil Schneider, President of Meant to be Seen and Executive Director of The S-3D Gaming Alliance.

In PC gaming, there are several stereoscopic 3D solutions that are based on DDD, iZ3D, and NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision software drivers.  While vendors are proud of compatibility statements as high as 400+ games, these expectations are hard to confirm, they are not publicly defined, and there is little to no consistency between games and driver solutions.

Through a website, gamers submit a title by sharing details about the hardware and software they use, and then answer a series of multiple choice questions about the game and how it behaves in stereoscopic 3D.  M3GA then takes this information, and creates both a numeric score and a certification grade.  The end result is a growing database of games that have been tested on DDD, iZ3D, and NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision drivers complete with recommended game settings, consistent rules and visual expectations, and a customer driven stamp of approval.

The software that drives M3GA was written and designed by Neil Schneider, Vadim Krivosheyev, Yuriy Nikshych, and Cris Villalobos.

Gamers, media, and game developers are encouraged to visit the MTBS’ 3D Game Analyzer at http://www.mtbs3d.com/m3ga.

MTBS is the consumer arm of the non-profit S-3D Gaming Alliance, the official voice and standards body for stereoscopic 3D gaming.
