Re: Some questions about 3D projectors

i was curious about this also and i couldnt find quite enough information either

i found some threads where people talk about needing to build their own glasses sync devices using things like rasberry pi, in order to get modern 3d-capable projectors to work right. then they tell 3dvision to use a custom EDID or they use the crt profiles.

i got the impression that unless you already have a 3dvision projector it is better to get a modern 3d-capable projector and just try to make it compatible with extra hardware/software. however the nvidia 3dvision glasses themselves seem to still be preferred if you can get them. i dont know for sure :(

if you're getting one for games also be sure to check the input latency! some 3d projectors are just too slow

i cant help much but i hope you get replies and write about any success!

It is pretty hard to find review for 3D projectors and more for GAMING !

What are the 3 best 3D projectors for gaming available now ? I have seen the Sony SONY VPL-VW570ES. Is he ok for gaming ? Is it the best available ? But it got 30/35ms input lag.
I have found Optoma UHZ50 more recent. Do you have more ? Does 4K 3D Projector exists ?

Thanks :)

EDIT: Is seems 4K projector doesn't exist... There is no way to force them output in 4K 3D ?
If not, i think the best solution is still my old LG OLED 65C6V with my 4K 3D...

yeah that would be cool: if we cant buy helixvision (even directly from author) then could the helixvision VR HMD output features get ported to 3DFix Manager/geo11?

all it really needs to do is just output the 3Dvision stuff as SBS to the VR display...and if active 3d shutter display systems get harder to find or harder to make work then VR HMDs will probably be more popular anyway as a beginners method to use 3DVision

3Dman, why aren't you on the 3D Vision discord? It's moderated properly by esteemed shader hackers, and the conversation is very lively...

I fully agree, however your presence here does not go unnoticed - you are an ingrained member of the community mate.

Discord does have info, however the general channels are more about interaction, chat, memes, and sharing fun :)

On topic, I find that geo-11 + KatangaVR with a high resolution VR headset sch as the reverb G2 is a far superior experience to a projector.

Projector:
60fps
75% brightness loss
half resolution due to sbs/ou native modes
~45 degree FOV.
1080p.
interleaved to alternate eyes

HMD:
90fps/120fps/144fps
full brightness
full resolution
4k+ resolution
double the performance for 'free'
both eyes get the proper image simultaneously.
90 degree fov.

I still use my projector as my main display as a monitor replacement. 3D is on HMD only nowadays however.

thankyou 3dnovice for your help in the forum

ragedemon, when i first read about katangavr it was as a part of helixvision (no longer available). when i search for it i find information on vrscreencap which is listed as an alternative to katanga. i hope you will not mind if i ask for information about katanga?

is it only available in helixvision or is it now a part of geo11 or what?

and also thank you for your information about project vs vr hmd, i figured that would be the case so i went with a vr hmd...but i still bought a 2080ti to make sure i could use the 3dvision stuff.

Katanga was a part of Helixvision, true.

Geo-11 native output is SBS/Over Under. To make 3D possible on SBS/OA devices, the driver renders the scene at twice the resolution, then cuts it in half. e.g. a 1920x1080 rendered image will be displayed at 960x1080 for the left eye and 960x1080 for the right eye.

Thus you intrinsically have a 50% drop in performance.

Before going silent, bo3b made alterations to Katanga to enable it to output the full resolution natively to each HMD screen from Geo-11.

In doing so, the user gets full 4K image without any performance loss, 90fps, and even head tracking of sorts, if one wraps the screen around.

In my humble opinion, it's the main way to play today. Projectors, 3D monitors, 3D TVs are not nearly as good and only provide half the resolution and performance.

Optimum setup guide:
1. Use DRS tool to create insane resolutions, making SURE to stay below your pixel clock by setting it at say 10Hz refresh. I like to play at 4000x3000@10Hz.

2. Set game to said resolution. Monitor will go blank because of obvious unsupported resolution, HOWEVER, Katanga_VR will kick in and show the game in real 4000x3000 @ 90fps (disable VSync or you will get 10fps due to your custom refresh rate of 10Hz!

3. SET STEAM VR SUPERSAMPLING TO 4000X3000! (SAME RESOLUTION AS YOUR CUSTOM RESOLUTION).

4. You can add Reshade VR toolkit to further amplify the amazing resolution. https://vrtoolkit.retrolux.de/

5. win

The experience is mind-blowing. The only better experience is truly native games such as half-life alyx, or VR moded games e.g. Luke Ross's moded games.

6. I ought to add a mention to VorpX and Ralf. They give good VR experience too, but of course game support is not great, and the fixes mostly only work because most problematic shaders have been disabled. Performance is also not fantastic... but it is a great experience nonetheless, if the only other alternative is pancake :)

===========

If you already bought helixvision, Katanga is available to you still. If not, then I don't know a correct way of getting it except maybe reaching out to bo3b and sending him money directly maybe - He's a fine chap.

I have tried VR ScreenCap - similar to Kqatanga though can't remember the particulars.

awesome reply, thank you very much!

your suggestion sounds good and hopefully it will allow me to get some use from the compatible nvidia hardware/drivers i bought

vorpx is great and i recommend it to all pcvr hmd owners, every compatible game becomes 100x as fun for less than the cost of a new game (or a couple dlc).

but anyhow i am fine just using the hmd for stereoscopic view instead of virtual reality experience so 3dvision system will have the most game titles available

i will try to find how to contact bo3b so i can see if there are any options, maybe he has an active forum or email or github i could try

thanks

You wrong here !
You only see resolution, but you forget something: Pixel per degree !
In fact even with the next Apple Vision pro and his panels 3660 x 3142 so Total resolution is 23 million pixels ( 11.5 Million pixels per panel) BUT with FOV for 120°...
https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality ... esolution/
So far far away vs on TV 4K on 45° fov wich would be a LOT more pixel per degree than ANY VR headset.
So even Vision pro, watching a movie would be around watching it on 1080p screen !

+ u can add low nits for VR headset (no HDR and around 350 nits for Valve Index for example but Vision Pro could be 5000 nits!) and lenses down the luminosity. The only real good things vs screen is the perfect 3D because one eye got the good picture and no ghosting.
That's why for example i HATE to play in 3D Vision with Helixmod with my Index, the image quality is FAR FAR AWAY frome my PG278QR or even my LG OLED65C6V !
