4090 5600X Pimax 8KX iRacing - Wow.

Post by KrisRoberts »

I was able to order an MSI 4090 last week!

My primary use case is sim racing in VR with the Pimax 8KX.

So far with all the VR headsets and systems I've used over the years I've been able to balance options vs performance and come out with reasonably satisfactory settings, but there have always been compromises.

TLDR; for the first time in a long time the RTX 4090 has been an upgrade that exceeded my expectations and lets me run the resolution I want, at max framerate with all the options I care about in iRacing enabled. Its amazing.

Here's a quick video of the initial profiling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5pX3zKcyFA

Installation was tight - it barely fits in my case and I did have to move fan placement around to get it in.

The 3DMark scores are crazy. The graphics score increases over the 3090 are > 86% and the delta from the 2080Ti is just ridiculous.

The first iRacing test sessions have also been really good. After a full hour race, temps are in the low 60s. GPU utilization was nearly pegged.

In this test I was running the Pimax at 10488x3524 and 90Hz with all the graphics options I care about enabled and still seem to have a little headroom for more tweaking!

At first glance this is a really solid upgrade from the 3090 I've been using. With that GPU and the same resolution I was only running 75Hz, had many options turned down from max, no HDR and still hit occasional dips in framerate.

Previously when I was benchmarking the differences between the 5600X and 5800X3D the high watermark I ran was 140% SteamVR resolution (5916x3976 per eye) with HDR. Neither CPU could run that close to 75Hz with my 3090.

The same 5600X system with the 4090 is able to do nearly run the same test at 90Hz. For people who like graphs, charts and strong opinions, here's a preliminary run with the same replay I was using for those comparisons:

There is a little framerate fluctuation, but this is also an overkill situation. In practice I'm running at 110% SteamVR resolution (5344x3524 per eye) and feel that is satisfactory with all the options I care about at max and it makes solid 90Hz in all the car/track combinations I've tried so far.

Performance has been great, temps are reasonable, I have yet to look at the practical power draw but so far that's the least of my concerns...
