EDID 300hz Laptop screen

Post by a31632 »

I have an Alienware Area 51m-R2 laptop with a 300hz screen currently (RTX 2070 Super nVidia) and 3D Vision works great on the additional 3D vision capable external monitor.

I was looking for the first time into EDID and found out that with “Monitor Asset Manager” I will be able to create an “inf” file that captures the monitor info of my other (old) Alienware 17 laptop which actually has a 3D Vision display.

The question is, can I potentially use the extracted “inf” file from my 3D Vision laptop and trick my current laptop with EDID to let my 300hz screen be recognized as a “3D Vision ready” display?
I know I need to plug in the pyramid and install all drivers for 3D Vision, but hoping that I can maybe use 3D Vision also on my standard laptop display instead of only on the external monitor.

I can confirm that the RTX 2070 Super card is directly connected to the laptop screen, so not using the Intel integrated graphics chip, and it is more than 120hz so I thought it might be worth a try to install the “inf” file.
Good news is that it is all the same manufacturer (Dell/Alienware).

All I read on EDID is only focussed on 3D TV or passive 3D screens so I’m not sure if my thoughts or theory would be an option.
Given all the knowledge floating around here I wanted to get some expert feedback on this prior to just trying things.

An EDID is part of Microsoft's OS. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... itor-edids
An Eeprom is where the information is installed on the display hardware.

I'm unsure if you can use an EDID overwrite on a laptop since an integrated emitter is expected by Nvidia's drivers. It's unknown if
the drivers would recognize the external emitter in this case. If not, it might be possible to try an EDID from an external monitor
that does not have an integrated emitter.
Dunno

This question has been asked several times on the old forums, but the posters never responded back whether they were
successful or not. So please let us know if you have any luck or if you do not even bother please post as such.

I had a go at it but unfortunately only succeeded partly.
Your suggestion to use the external monitor's driver (I have an Alienware AW2518H which is 3D Vision ready) succeeded as my laptop now has the properties (name, resolutions) as the external monitor.
3D Fix Manager doesn't flag the screen as a "laptop screen" anymore but 3D doesn't get enabled as 3D Fix Manager tells me to connect an external monitor anyways.

I remembered Schwing had "forced 3D" by loading 2 reg files and that did change the toggle in an older version (1.75) of the fix manager, so all good there, but in control panel no 3D options available and 3D not kicking in.
When I updated Fix Manager back to 1.79 the toggle turned 3D off again and back to square one......
So your idea was a good one, but even when reloaded the .reg files again and re-installed the 3D Vision driver again, it still was a no go.

See the screenshots I took...........

I assume that you have an external emitter correct?

Be sure to check device manager and verify that the USB driver is installed.

What driver are you trying to use? I suggest 425.31 or older.

Yes, external emitter. The USB driver was installed and using 452.22 nVidia Driver. I have an RTX 2070 Super so can’t use 425.31 at all, it won’t install. I’m on Windows 10 LTSC 2019, so basically 1809 pro with updates till 2029, so no driver hack needed.

Very happy with how it works for the rest, just trying to get my 300hz screen to work in 3D Vision too.

Curious on why you couldn't install 425.31 - I have a 1660 Super and installed it fine.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 3D Vision cap out at 120Hz?

The 2070 Super cards came out well after the 425.31 driver so that driver is not supported. It has been mentioned a lot over here. Also doesn’t show as a compatible card with card compatibility list. 2060/2070/2080 supported but not Super cards.

I tried with Win 11, Win 10 2H21 and Win 10 1809 and no luck, also with driver hack to manually add card in the driver info file for install no luck. If you know a way please let the community here know as this is unfortunately a known fact.

As far as I know 144hz is the max. My monitor can use 240hz stereo in the settings though and with stereo stays on that setting.

There was a driver trick posted on these forums to install any 3D compatible driver (425.31 - 452.06) with a Super card by extracting and moving 2 files from the 425.31 driver installer cab file over to the nvidia directory and overwriting - I had to edit file creation dates on the files so that they matched the driver install but the 1660 Super ran fine with 425.31. Just search the forums, it can be done and there's a short tutorial.

You probably refer to this post below but this will not install 425.31. It will allow you to install 3D Vision with newer drivers but it still installs a later driver from nVidia. It’s basically what 3D Fix Manager is doing too.

That's the one and if you don't use 3DFM for the automated install, you should be able to install 425.31 unless Win 10 or the video card is blocking it.

Not sure why it doesn't work for you

I think we misunderstand each other.
I have 3D Vision working on.driver 452.22 so that is fine. 3D Vision version is 425.31. So that’s all good and working.

I wanted to install the full driver 425.31 not just only the 3D Vision portion. That is my question here. I have used Bringback3DV, 3D Fixmanager and Losti’s tool and they all do the trick perfectly as in the example you mentioned.

I have an older laptop and can install nVidia driver 425.31 with native 3D Vision support on it. Because I have a 2070 Super card the earliest version that installs is 431.** not 425.31.

Hope this clears it up.
