Looks like congratulations are in order for the S-3D movie industry!

The Blu-Ray Disc Association has approved the final spec for 3D Blu-Ray. Highlights include:

1. Backwards compatibility with 2D content and 2D Blu-Ray players.
2. 1080P per eye S-3D support.
3 Special considerations to ensure Sony PS3 Blu-Ray S-3D compatibility.

As per the BDA press release:

"The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players. The specification also incorporates enhanced graphic features for 3D. These features provide a new experience for users, enabling navigation using 3D graphic menus and displaying 3D subtitles positioned in 3D video."

We think the other shoe will drop at CES this year, and it will be made clear as to why Sony required special PS3 considerations. We think it will be something that goes beyond a PS3 firmware update, and the big story with all its ramifications hasn’t hit the press just yet. If correct, we’ll know for sure in January! In the meantime, 2010 is shaping up to be an exciting year in S-3D gaming. Congratulations to BDA and all its members!
