Ultrasonic 3d locating of objects is actually a fairly old technology. There were some products sold to use for 3D digitizing objects. But, they were very short lived because there are several things that can affect the readings, such as barometric pressure, temperature, and even humidity. Those can be compensated for. But, what really killed it is they are very vulnerable to air currents changing the readings.
In spite of the short comings, it may be a good technology for hand held pointing devices, since accuracy is not as critical as for other things.
