Does Dell Precision m3800 support NVIDIA 3D Vision?

Hi folks,

I am looking to buy a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation m3800 for my VR works. It is very lightweight and supports OpenGL quad-buffered stereo through NVIDIA Quadro K1100M. I am planning to use it with my 3D monitor (Acer gd245hq).

There are several discussions on Internet about recent laptops with NVIDIA Optimus technology may not work with NVIDIA 3D Vision (external 3D monitors).

Could anyone here with Dell m3800 confirm if the laptop supports NVIDIA 3D Vision monitors or not?

Additionally, Dell m3800 has only mini DisplayPort and HDMI outputs but my Acer 3D monitor needs Dual-Link DVI input for 3D effects. Will mDP->Dual-Link DVI adapter work?

Thanks,
Mark

I don't know for sure, but my gut is telling me it won't work. Two reasons.

1) The video card (K1100M) is not listed here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision- ... ments.html

2) Optimus (which is the worst thing to happen to 3D). I was one of those people that got burned with an Optimus laptop. Sadly, Nvidia even claimed that my laptop was supported on their website, when it totally was not. So don't even take their website as gospel. Pretty upset about that, but there also are not many options in this market, so you have to bend over and deal with it.

Thanks, cybereality.

Regarding 1), I am quite sure Quadro K1100M supports 3D Vision. See below:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/mobile-wor ... -gpus.html

The information on NVIDIA website is rather inconsistent.

What I am worried most is Optimus. As far as I know, it may work if there is a video output on Dell m3800 attached to NVIDIA GPU.

Anyone has any alternative laptop to suggest? I am looking for mobile workstation supporting Quadro (for quad-buffered stereo) and 3D Vision (external monitor). Lightweight is great too but not as critical.

Mark

Maybe I'm wrong.

On this page it seems to imply that external monitors use the Nvidia GPU
The all-new display engine in the NVIDIA Kepler GPU drives up to four displays simultaneously, whether they’re directly connected to the board or connected using a single cable using DisplayPort 1.2’s new multi-streaming capabilities. - See more at: http://www.nvidia.com/object/features-m ... 4a8Bz.dpuf
http://www.nvidia.com/object/features-m ... -gpus.html

This guy seems to think that Quadro laptops can output to 120Hz monitors over DisplayPort:
I was able to successfully run the full-screen 3D Vision 3D Wizard by porting a 3D signal from a laptop's Quadro with DP only to a 120 Acer monitor

Still not sure, but maybe it can work.

lonvr: Thanks! May I ask what monitor model and video connection type (mDP, HDMI) you have tested with?
