Which software to use for designing HMD/virtual prototyping?

I open this thread so everyone can get advice on which software to use for designing HMDs and virtual prototyping.
IMO it's important to know in advance how a prototype might behave in the real world before its construction, testing on real materials can be painfully expensive if something goes wrong/not as expected, so if you can minimize the errors as much as possible by virtualizing it in a simulated environment or computer simulation it is better, imagine something to see in advance how a picture would appear given certain lenses, distances and mirrors, does it even exist? If it does, where I can find it?
One thing that would be extremely useful for me, is a simple minimalistic 3D modeling software optimized for lasercutting, so I can export 3D models into 2D vectors in real metric or imperial values, that I can then print on paper, glue on wood sheets and cut out with a manual saw (not everyone have a laser cutter).
Any suggestions and ideas are most welcome.
