cut into dk1 for greater fov

Post by cgp44 »

The FOV is limited due to eye to lense surface distance.
It really reduces the advertised FOV.

I'm planning to get the lenses as close to my eyes as possible.
I have tried the shims under the lenses cup but this just defocuses.
My nose and possibly my forehead are in the way.

So I am planning to cut into the lenses cup and the plastic around the
nose to open it up. I will reseal the light box with blackened paper.

This is a similar setup with my DIY goggles built around a safety goggle:
using paper glued to the flexible plastic to make the frame of a light box.
I cut into the B cups for my nose.

Has anybody attempted this?

If you change the distance between the lens and the screen, then it will likely go out of focus.

Not sure why the lenses aren't close enough for you. For me they're practically touching my eyeballs.

Its due to the variablity of the human face wrt eye forehead nose
dimension in the forward direction. This causes great difference in
FOV immersion experience. Thus making some wonder what the
hype is all about.

I will attempt to get the lense to blinking brush distance.

:o Oh, no! What are you doing to that poor Rift!? :o

The way you cut the Rift was not a good choice, now you are going to be able to see the screen in your peripheral vision.
There maybe also is going to be some light leaking over from one eye to the other.

here is the layered paper strip surface construction.
The lense is now right up to my eye ball.
Once dry I will paint the surface with Star Brite Liquid
electrical tape' to form a smooth and light sealed cover.
I also removed the foam on the forehead portion of the
mask.

Here's to full FOV immersion.

the nose surface cover comes down to the display
surface so we will see whether there is any light leakage
from the other eye. I can just put lugs on the underside to seal this.

I suffer two from the eye cups touching my node an becoming uncomfortable after long sessions.
Only problem with your design is that you can't take the eyecups off to clean the screen.

Question:
Can you see the tape when you have the rift on?

The nose job cover will be attached to the mask with tape to the lenses cup.
It is removable, but you may need to remove the 4 bolted head straps.

To make the cutting workable I had to cut off the cable attachment from the main mask
Casement. So the cable attachment bit is now glued to the front display/motion chip housing.
This is cool for display surface cleaning (by removing the front housing with a screwdriver)
and for pc-on-a-small screen viewing.

With black tape and the glossy black liquid electric tape paint I am confident the nose job will
Not be noticeable. It will certainly be more comfortable.
I'll prove this once done.

the cover that fits in the hole.
cutDK1cover.jpg
underside blackened to maintain lightbox environment.
cutDK1CoverUnderside.jpg

and all put together, sorry with white tape.
cutDK1Done.jpg
So no light leaks between eye boxes.
No need to seal cable attachment cutting.
The nose sides do not pertrude into the view.

Thus the scuba edge moves out a bit.

This has turned out well.

The goggles are much more comfortable.

But now I can see the eye box dark partition.
So I will cut it out. You will see the other eye
screen edge, but hopefully it will have a similar
colour to the other screen and hence blend in
better.
