My DIY VR gun experiments

Post by greggl »

Heya!

Wanted to show the diy 'gun' I've been working on. This is the first one I kitted out with a torn apart wiimote/chuck.
I got it running, handed it to my wife and started filming. (I think it worked... She's addicted to DayZ now:).

My day job is vfx and virtual tech for production. I'd love to see a consumer product through to market, but as they say, 'Hardware is hard'.

It's amazing to see the VR gaming space heat up!

OMG!!! This is what MTBS is all about.

Guess I must have missed this over the holidays, great stuff.

@TheVividLight: The OP has an embedded YouTube video. Maybe you don't have Flash installed or are browsing on an iPad, etc.

man this is awesome and the monitor is perfect to get people understanding the concept right away!!
that is exactly the kind of stuff good kickstarters can be made off!

how does the tracking work?

I'm staying tracking solution agnostic - every solution has an Achilles' heel somewhere.
I've hooked these up to optical systems, IMUs, magnetic - even massive hollywood virtual production systems and motion capture systems.

Still experimenting :)

I've been using the hell out of this tech - there is a piece that includes a portion of how I employed it at the 2:00 mark.

:o ... i love the tracked camera experience. having the ability to do this is cool. watched a demo once where camera picture was merged with a realtime Avatar rendering and it blew my mind. Can't wait to get the ability to do this at home!
Looking forward to your progress, please share a status from time to time :)
