Apple Granted a Knockout Head Mounted Display System Patent

Post by metalqueen »

Apple invented a video headset back in 2006 and was granted a patenthttp://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2009/09/apple-wins-stunning-patent-for-new-ipod-video-headset-display-1.html for it in September 2009. Since that time Apple has added a few inventions to keep their project evolving over time, with the most recent mention of a headset being noted in a patent application relating to hidden audio sensorshttp://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2012/12/apple-invents-displays-with-hidden-audio-sensors-for-the-mac-tv-idevices-video-glasses-more.html. Over the weekend we covered a patent that Apple acquired from PrimeSensehttp://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/12/take-a-peek-at-a-few-key-primesense-patents-that-apple-gained.html regarding an advanced headset to add to Apple's patent portfolio on head mounted displays. Today, the US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a knockout granted patent for a detailed head mounted head display that resembles the Oculus Rifthttp://www.oculusvr.com/ which is the buzz of the gaming world at the moment. Apple's patent makes it clear that gaming is one of the main entertainment options for this device. It's also designed to be a personal display system so that you could enjoy full HD widescreen experiences on the go with your iPhone or at Home with your Apple TV. Without a doubt, it's the surprise granted patent of the year.

Hmmm do the US patent Office grant everything Apple submits?

There seem to be one or two features in there I've seen at least tried before which I'm sure were submitted by other companies i.e Prior Art?

Prior art is out of fashion at the patent office.

OculusVR has a bad neighbor?
http://gizmodo.com/249984/death-of-innovation-hop+on-gets-patent-for-mp3-phones-plans-to-sue-everyone wrote:You may not be familiar with Hop-on, a company based in both Irvine, CA, and China, but you're going to hear a lot about them soon. Why? Because they've just been granted a patent for an "MP3 phone with speakers on the side, in addition to front and side buttons to activate its camera/video features." Doesn't that describe just about every phone that plays MP3s? Yes. Yes it does.
Practicing the prior art is not a defense against patent infringement lawsuits:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13796_3-9894563-79.html wrote:"How can we possibly infringe this patent--we're just doing what people have done for years." This familiar refrain is what's known in the patent law as the practicing the prior art defense. But, other than a narrowly defined exception for business methods, the "practicing the prior art defense" has been squarely rejected by the courts
Apparently the patent office receives more revenue by allowing just about anything to be patented despite prior art...

Apple is not alone in their exploitation of the patent system to harm competitors. This is really bad for small startups, and indie developers...
