google translate:

google translated and "improved" the translation:
The display of the developer version of the cyber glasses has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, but has the breakdown for both eyes an effective resolution of 640x800 pixels. To make matters worse: You look from a few centimeters to the screen. The graphics are so far the biggest shortcoming of the glasses. However, the developers promise that retail version will provide a better picture. They have their eyes set on a resolution of 2160x1600 pixels.

do they mean 2560x1600? Or 2160p(UHD 4K) and 1600p(WQXGA) versions.

There should be a number of good 2560x1600 panels available so I take it they meant WQXGA.

Thats a spoof.
i think they meant 2560 x 1600.
But Nate Mitchell already said, that 1080p is only the baseline and Palmer Luckey even want to have
a 4k panel if possible.
But yeah, its encouraging that Oculus keeps on pushing towards the boundaries.
I am sure they are going to put in a 1600p panel if it will be available and inexpensive. :D

EDIT: By the way, computerbild only has tested the dev kit and those lines about 'promise and achieving 1600p' were just put together. i dont think they interviewed Oculus. So, nothing new.
And 'Welt' just copied the article.

ComputerBild is well known for their boulevard-level...

And here:
They write that the AAA games will have support through special drivers like VorpX!
And that its only a monitor, so it is likely a supported peripheral by Xbox One and PS4!

So far for their accuracy...and a good example for todays quality of journalism...

Btw, in terms of resolution they just state what we already know. Oculus is looking for a much better resolution in the consumer rift. So we can count with at least 1080p. Depends solely on panel availability and price.

you are right. I dont read those articles anymore because they always bring up news that are two months old and talk about the Rift as if it is only a gimmick.

Actually now that I got my rift...I feel that the 1080 is definitely still not going to be good enough...4k will be a must down the road.

Remember that because of the aspect ratio of the screen, a lot of pixels are outside of the usable space.

The closer to 2:1 we get, the more efficient we will be at using the pixels we have.

With the current aspect ratio (if you adjust it so you can't see the side edges) you're losing about 23.4% of the total pixels.

The I believe the 5.6" screen was better at fitting in your FoV for some reason (maybe it didn't have square pixels?). Maybe it was because the each pupil fit into the center of each section of the screen IPD wise.

I think the rift should follow the design that TheLostBrain put up. 2 1900x1200 screens would be awesome.

c'mon... any "news" from AxelSpringer (that's the publishing company) is for entertainment purpose only and their success is just a shame for german media landscape

But there is still hope.

Although 8,9 inch 1600p(end of the year) is slightly to big, maybe other manufacturers will consider to sell a 7 inch 1600p version perhaps already in march 2014 or so to beat their competitor.
