My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
It arrives tomorrow, is there anything I need to download to my PC? Anything I need to know? So excited.
Last questions, is there any way of upgrading the LCD that comes in the rift? Or is that just crazy talk? :p
any and all help is appreciated. OMG OMG so psyched.

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
Make sure you have the latest display drivers for your graphics card (from the manufacturer's website, or your laptop company's website if you are using a laptop) and the latest DirectX patches from Microsoft - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=35
This forum has a bunch of demos that people have tried - https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/v ... m.php?f=42
There are also sites like http://www.riftenabled.com/ and http://www.stv.re/ for demos
Then, simply STRAP IT ON AND HOLD ON TIIIIIIIIIGHT

OK great thanks, what about games? Will all my Steam games work? Or are there special versions I need to have? I'll go buy them right now and download them if need be. I just want to have all the content I can so tomorrow I can just OD on Rift LOL.
Does anybody have a list of all compatible games?
Thanks again!

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
AFAIK there are only 3 supported AAA games at the moment, some of them in beta : Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2 and Portal.
There are a handfull of Indie games also, but with varying quality regarding Oculus Rift support : Qbeh, Surgeon Simulator 2013, War Thunder, Proton Pulse, Museum of the Microstar, Garry’s Mod, Strike Suit Zero, Rift Rush.
You can also have a look at some VR mods : Doom 3: BFG Edition, Minecrift.
Or try the Vireio stereo driver for some supported games.
But I think for a first experience it would be better to try some demos like these ones : Blue Marble, Darkfield, Titans of Space, Heli-Hell, HydraDeck, Rift Coaster or VR Cinema 3D.

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
Ah I see, I thought I'd be able to play Penumbra and Aliens Vs Predator with DirectX 11. So no DirectX11 games?
Can I use my Steam games of Half Life 2 and Portal 2? Or do they have to be disk versions?
Half Life 2 is worth it. Hopefully there will be hacks to get some other games working like Need for Speed Shift 1 and 2/ Project Cars/and a few of the flight simulators
Can I use my Dbox motion setup with the Rift?
thanks

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
All of Valve's games are really Steam games, so they will all work. For some (all?) of the Valve games that support the Rift (TF2 and all the HL2s are it I think..? Portal sort of worked briefly, but they pulled it), OH and Lost Coast used to work but apparently crashes now,
ALSO, Garry's Mod supports the Rift
Sooo.. to enable the Valve games to use the Rift, you need to select the SteamPipe beta, right-click the game, go to Properties, go to Beta, blammy. For TF2 I think it's 'pre-release', for Garry's, dev. Then, under the General tab, type -vr into the launch options. Then, hit OK, then, Rift up
I don't have my Rift yet myself (it's due to arrive Friday), so I haven't tested these myself.. I know the SteamPipe beta stuff was definitely necessary at first.. it may not be now for some of them? But I think it is.. the -vr thing though definitely is.
As for all the other demos and games, most of them just assume you have a Rift.
Another one people consistently say is amazing is Minecrift.. you've probably seen the thread(s) for that here though.

I think that Tempest 2000 from the Atari Jaguar would blow you away on the Rift. I wonder if the PC version, I forgot what its called, could be hacked to work. that would be AMAZATRON.

Actually, TF2 now includes Oculus Rift support in the main program, so no need to opt into any betas. You still need -vr though. As far as I can tell, all the other Valve games that support the Rift still need the beta.

You type -vr in the options under Properties->Set Launch Options (it's a command-line parameter to the EXE)

The Essential Reality P5 glove doesn't work with it yet. Someone said they were going to get it working in Quake 3, but then changed their mind. But I'm sure I'll get the P5 working with something for the Rift eventually.mayaman wrote:LOL

The Hydra works with it for several games and demos.
I don't know about the Falcon. There are probably games where you can use the Rift with the Falcon using Novint's drivers, but I haven't heard of anything natively supporting both yet. That doesn't mean there isn't anything though. I don't have a Falcon. It would be great to have a sense of touch in VR though, even if the range is limited and doesn't allow 1:1.
Anyway, I was sort of joking with that pic.

I'll try to come up with a more serious answer for you.

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
Are you a consumer or a developer?
Most people start with the Tuscany demo. There are several versions. The Unity Tuscany Demo and the C++ Tuscany Demo are from Oculus, and you can download them here:
https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=dl&v=8
I think the C++ version of the Tuscany Demo is in the SDK.
You can also get the Unreal SDK (1.5 GB) if you want to try the Epic Citadel demo (but without the snow), or Unreal Tournament.
Valve are very good at supporting the Rift, so you will need to have Steam, and get the legit steam versions of the Orange Box (or it's games individually) and Team Fortress 2. In Steam you need to enable the beta participation for those games. And you should set them to start with the -vr command line parameter, either in Steam or by creating a shortcut to the exe file and changing it's properties.
There are loads of demos, support added to open source games, and work-in-progress games by people on these forums. You can search here and at the developer.oculusvr.com forums for demos and works in progress, or you can go to one of these sites that list them and let you download them:
http://www.riftenabled.com/
http://www.theriftlist.com/
There's a torrent of all the Rift demos but it hasn't been updated for a couple of months:
http://www.torrenthound.com/hash/59b94c ... 05-04-2013
Some games were on Kickstarter, or Indiegogo, and you needed to pledge to get early access to them. Some you can still pledge to get early access to from their websites, like http://www.thegallerygame.com
There's a Vireio Perception forum on these forums, which you should check to see what's the best version to download, but it's a bit tricky to set up.
Some games may need updated graphics drivers.
You should watch this YouTube channel for tips:
http://www.youtube.com/user/HapPProductions
You can upgrade the lenses though. Some people have made custom lenses for it.
Yes, the Rift doesn't come with any software or discs, so you won't be able to use it unless you download something.mayaman wrote:It arrives tomorrow, is there anything I need to download to my PC?

Penumbra: Overture is open source, so it will get full Oculus Rift support eventually, but I don't think anyone has done it yet.mayaman wrote:Ah I see, I thought I'd be able to play Penumbra and Aliens Vs Predator with DirectX 11. So no DirectX11 games?
Aliens Vs Predator might be supported by VorpX or Vireio Perception, but I don't know. VorpX hasn't been released yet.
I don't think Rift support in Portal 2 is finished yet. Valve were working on Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, Half Life 2 episodes, source mods, and Portal 1 first. Last I checked they had disabled the Rift support in Portal 1 (it wasn't finished yet, and was released accidentally). The Vireio Perception driver has partial support for Portal 2, but it isn't very good yet (last time I checked), so it might be best to wait for Valve's version.mayaman wrote:Can I use my Steam games of Half Life 2 and Portal 2? You must use Steam to play Half Life 2, because it requires the SteamPipe Beta to be enabled in Steam for it to work (I think).
I think there will be. I don't know if there is yet, but I heard rumours about games like that getting support.mayaman wrote:Half Life 2 is worth it. Hopefully there will be hacks to get some other games working like Need for Speed Shift 1 and 2/ Project Cars/and a few of the flight simulators

I am planning on starting with that one as well... But a quick question: What is the difference between that one, and the one directly from Sixense? Dumb question, but is your rift turned on?mayaman wrote:But can't get anything to display on the rift.
1. Right click on HL2 in steam.mayaman wrote:I tried finding the "steampipe" but can't find it.
2. Go to settings.
3. Choose the beta tab.
4. Select steampipe beta
5. Restart Steam to start download.
6. Set -vr as launch option. (you can set launch options in the settings)

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
TF2 is the only Valve game with official Rift support right now. HL2's is in beta. HL2 probably starts with some 'default' VR settings that don't match up for you somehow.
People are manually copying their settings from their TF2 config files into their HL2 files once they use the VR configurator in TF2.
With TF2, you do not need to opt into any beta, you just need to use -vr in the options and maybe a -dxlevel of some kind.
If copying settings around sounds too complicated, then I say wait until HL2's support is official, or Google around until you find a page that explains it for you. I haven't gotten my Rift yet so I haven't done it yet myself.

Re: My Rift arrives tomorrow!!! What do I need to be ready?
Sounds like your problem is the wrong IPD.
Here are the instructions on how to set your IPD in Half Life 2:

These console variables are what you need per user.
vr_ipdtest_left_i
vr_ipdtest_left_o
vr_ipdtest_left_t
vr_ipdtest_left_b
vr_ipdtest_right_i
vr_ipdtest_right_o
vr_ipdtest_right_t
vr_ipdtest_right_b
vr_separation_user_inches
vr_separation_toein_pixels
I went through vr_calibration in tf2 and extracted these saved values from config.cfg in my TF2 cfg folder to a file called vr.config in my HL2 cfg folder. After starting up HL 2 i entered "exec vr.cfg" in the console. Try and see how it works for you.
For me the problem is that even TF2 with vr_calibration still seems to make me feel crosseyed and have double vision when switching to reality compared to other apps like the Tuscany demo or MinecRift mod.
