Standardised Eye Chart for Head Mounted Display

Post by budda »

Hi,

Its time for a standardised eye-chart for assessing the optical output quality for Head Mounted Displays.

The reason is becoming apparent. Different HMD makers are showing video of the HMD display but there is no basic benchmark to compare with. Its 'apples vs oranges' at the moment.

The charts should be sized so they are scaled to each particular display size - where 100% is the maximum screen size - such as 1920 x 1080 or 640 x 800.

The charts should be in side by side format for testing Oculus Rift type displays.

Software distortion can be preapplied as we are judging the net output quality.

For charts numbers 1,2 & 3 it may be advisable to make them in separated primary colours such as red green or blue, so that chromatic aberations don't unnecessarily confuse the data.

I see some basic parameters needing testing:

1. Curvature of field

The curvature of field chart requires a grid of lined squares filling the display area.

2. Resolution

The resolution chart needs striped bars with defined pixel spacing at the corners and centre of the field.

3. Astigmatism

The astigmatism chart should have a dart-board like appearance with radial lines and concentric circles about the centre. This will test for tangential and sagittal astigmatism.

4. Chromatic aberation

The chromatic aberation chart should have concentric circles of different colours adjacent to each other, but with various sectors having different pixel offsets so the vernier like colour shifts can be easily seen across the display.

Perhaps, you can come up with other suggestions.

I challenge the photoshop/graphic artists out there to help make 'standardised' open-source MTBS3D Head Mounted Display Charts.

Thanks.
