Top strap on Rift devkit.

Post by Diorama »

I must have missed the thread where this was mentioned, or can't find it in the ~200 page Rift thread, but I hadn't noticed the top strap on the Rift devkit until now.
Was this on the earlier prototype used at CES or is it new? I might not have been looking that hard but don't remember it from videos I'd seen before.

Is it because of the added weight of the new body/7" screen, or is it just to provide more stability?

This is the strap I mean:

Sorry if this has been thoroughly discussed elsewhere.

I actually asked about that before. It's to distribute the weight better.

oh, wow, i haven't noticed that before either. reminds me of the comfort mod for the hmz-t1.

but, like you said, most likely to help with the added weight of the 7 inch screen.

From what I've read its purely an optional component. You can remove it if you don't have issues with the balance of the Rift. I think its a great addition actually, especially for extended sessions.

Exactly. It distributes weight better, but you can remove it if you want.

Great move, I always think its much more comfortable to have something resting on your head, rather than entirely supported by being clamped onto your face...

Liking the tweaks you've made to the Rift, I think you guys have done the right thing by supporting different lenses and having the adjustable strap.

I'm glad to finally see shots of it on people's heads. It really doesn't look as large or geeky as I expected. Ok, maybe a little geeky, but in a totally awesome way!

I am glad to see a top strap. Look like a great idea. I might have to come up with a way to integrate headphones or some nice ear buds into mine:)

Thanks for the answer, that's what I suspected.

I wonder how long until someone comes out with a custom 'Mohawk' top strap. hehe.

The stickers I want are some big stick-on "Googly Eyes" for the front faceplate of my Rift Dev Kit.

Image

An appropriately sized pair of these would be a great addition to the mohawk top-strap customization.

Like those modifications! :) I'm gonna go with the "googly eyes" when I get mine.

I had hoped that the plastic latch on top of the rift would be for some kind of positional tracking addon that the Oculus Rift team had come up with. They kind of teased it in the GDC videos but didn't specify if they had settled for a method yet. But I guess that will be independent from the head device then.

First he kills an ET.

Then he takes his rambo knife, and cuts the face off. Scrapes it clean, and then hangs it in the hot sun for about 7 days.

He takes to to an old Inuit lady who chews the requisite areas, to make it soft.

All the while, it is hit with some natural oils every now and then, to keep it soft, and to prevent decay, until it drys a bit, in the right ways.

Next, he folds the edges, and sews them so they look neat.

He puts some plastic fake eyes in the area they are supposed to be. Sews them into place, with some padding and cover. Glues them too, so they can't move and make ET look....less than happy.

He cuts a strip-like (and stitched) hole for the straps. Does a test fit or two, takes it off.

Puts it on ebay.

Sells for $52.47, with 19 bidders, all under the age of 12.

Kid uses it once, puts it down on the couch beside him..and wanders off and does something else.

The dog finds it and rips it to pieces, and eats some of it. Mostly the mouth, nose and ..the plastic eyes.

Dog ends up in vet clinic with emergency surgery for a blocked and twisted intestine/stomach.

Total cost: $955. Dog dies anyway.

So when you see ET in the woods, and think, 'Wow! Cool Oculus mask!', think again. Don't go there.

Simple, decide for a project, press buttons in Photoshop until it looks like you planned. That's what I have done, only took me ten years to get to where I am now :D It is probably much quicker to just look up tutorials for what you want to do, probably...

You should have posted it hosting it in the MTBS3D Gallery to use the stereo image code :P That makes it possible to adjust how it is displayed for S3D. My eyes just don't do crosseyed, haha, but I can enjoy it with inverted depth though, neat!

Your embedded 3D image locks up my Google Chrome browser in Windows 7 when I click it. And it does not work at all on my Nexus 7.

Worse, when I installed the 3D plugin on another computer, google warned me that it was at a suspicious and potentially dangerous website.
:(

I can view it by clicking "Mono", which displays a cross-eyed pair, but the default 3D just gives me the above error message.
