Playing 3D media on Rift?

From what I understand its possible to watch 3D movies on the rift but the distortion would make it not preferable. Is it possible to play already existing S3D media on the rift with some software to compensate for distortion or do we have to manually do so through re encoding?

There are a few projects aiming to create a VR theater so that 2D and 3D movies can be viewed comfortably with the Rift.

I don't have any trouble watching 3D Youtube videos on my DIY rift. Some of them even have correct aspect ratios so it just looks like a letterboxed movie that fills most of my view. Unfortunately, the new devkits don't have 100% eye coverage so they're not going to work for this.
