Reducing 3D Anaglyph Ghosting

Post by ElectroPulse »

Hello, all!

My Pro-Ana 3D Anaglyph glasses came in! Unfortunately, I am a bit disappointed...

I have been messing around with them, and there seems to be quite a bit of ghosting. I compared what I was seeing to what is shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOGjtcCxKqE

When comparing what they were seeing inthe first test with what I was seeing in the same image (found it on http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... 66&start=9), there is definitely more bleed-through with mine.

Through the left eye, I can see all three of the words "right" (however, the top and bottom are VERY faint. The middle appears almost the exact same as the bottom one of the word "left). With the right eye, the bottom one of the word "left" is not visible at all, however the top of the two is quite visible (I'd say about the same as the bottom "right," (I'm guessing that's because they appear to be the same color?) except slightly less due to the background).

I'm guessing that my monitor is playing a big role in this... Is there anything I can do about it? I read elsewhere that there isn't a whole lot, since you can't change the wavelengths of light coming out of your screen. I'm wondering how much color correction could help. I tried using the Catalyst Control Center (ATI's graphics control panel) for color correction, and it seemed to be a LITTLE better (mainly a tradeoff between my left and right eye about which had less ghosting), and with the monitor color correction there was practically no change.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

P.S. I have a Samsung P2350, if that helps any.

You can tinker around a bit with colors but in the end it's as you say: The basecolors of your monitor doesn't match the colors of the glasses in a good way. Do you have another monitor to try with?
Fun that the author of the movie mentions and tests the lee-filters. Those are by far best on most monitors but it's a hazzle to get them in smaller quantities and i've run out of them several months ago. :(

I've found the Pro-Ana glasses to work really well but, as mentioned, the monitor plays a big role in the final look of the 3D and how much ghosting there may be. The other great anaglyph glasses are the Pro-View and the Ana-Chrome. Maybe get a pair of those and see if they work better on your Samsung.

The red bleeding is something to be expected and is done on purpose to give more natural colors. Instead of looking at test images, you may have a look at real anaglyphs to see if the perception is better than with other glasses. To me that was the case compared to cardboard glasses.

This image was a pretty good illustration of it :

Also, be careful watching anaglyph videos (ie on YouTube) as the compression can make ghosting much worse. Better to test with a gaming driver like DDD or IZ3D.

Thanks for the replies! I need to figure out how to set up automatic subscribing to threads...

Anyway, for images like the one posted, there is no noticable ghosting, actually.

When I first tested it I was in a rush (had 15 minutes between class and work), so didn't have very long to test them out on more than a few things.

One was Minecraft... Its anaglyph 3D is done quite badly, so I can't fault the glasses for that.

However, there are just some images that ghost quite badly... Here are a couple (found on this site: http://designget.com/eye-popping-anaglyph-3d-images/):

http://designget.com/wp-content/uploads ... tereo1.jpg
For me, the doorway on the left, the sheet of paper posted up under the doorway, the lion's tail, the American flag, and the text behind the flag are the items that jump out at me with ghosting the most.

http://designget.com/wp-content/uploads ... p40001.jpg
For that one, I am pretty much seeing a faint double of everything...

And @Cybereality's last post: Yea, I tried one video on Youtube where a kid did some random stuff. One of the things he did was extend a telescope quite close to the cameras, and the ghosting was so bad I couldn't make my eyes focus on the correct images (combination of widely seperated images (though I'm quite good at controlling my eyes for those 3D images in books), and bad ghosting).

I'll probably mess around with the color settings some more... Can anyone recommend to me some (free) software that allows as much color correcting control as possible?

Thanks!

You'll always have some ghosting with anaglyphs, whatever the model of glasses you use. Its strength is also very dependent on the content, an heavy ghosting is quite normal on images with a lot of contrast like these ones. The question is, is it worse or better than with other glasses for you ?

Also ghosting is not the only thing to look for, comfort and color fidelity are also other important factors. And in this regard the Pro-Ana are better than cardboard glasses in my personal experience.

I think the best color correction algorithm for anaglyphs is from Eric Dubois, it's the one that's used in the 3D Vision driver and on YouTube 3D IIRC. Here is his website with some links to software using his algorithm :

Thanks for the reply!

Yea, like I mentioned, when I had posted this I had only tested this with a few applications (it just so happened the ones that I found weren't very good). I've been messing around with them a bit more, and they aren't as bad as I initially had thought...

As for compared with other glasses, I have no idea since I don't have any others.

Anyway, I am feeling less and less disappointed with this purchase... Some images are quite bad with them, but it seems like there are quite a few more that are really good with them. Now I just need to get some time to play some Minecraft (and whatever other game I find that has anaglyph 3D, or perhaps software that converts it to it) to see how I enjoy that :) (that was my main purpose for buying these... Minecraft, and looking into ways of making 2D content 3D with anaglyph).

Alright, I'll look into that (saving the link, need to study for a test now).

You can try the DDD TriDef Ignition driver, which converts tons of games to 3D.

I had real bad ghosting using the nvidia anaglyph driver, so tried IZ3D or DDD (can't remember which) and there was a huge improvement to the point where I had virtually zero ghosting. Give those two a try.
