Capacitive Tracking

Post by zalo »

I'd heard of this technology before, but I had never considered using it for 3D tracking:

Here's how to build one (the original creator):

Considering how simple this setup is, there's bound to be a way to raise the resolution and to lower the latency.
Theremins use the same technology, and they are pretty responsive and they work at long distances. The iPhone screen uses capacitive sensing too.

The Plus side is that you needn't wear any markers at all for it to work.
The Minus side is that they can only sense an indiscrete "blob", or just the general area of your fist.

Maybe the kinect is a better solution all around.

Interesting project, but ultimately not as useful as commercial stuff on the market.

Especially with the Leap coming soon we will have a good solution for 3D tracking with a fixed space.
