Kinect Musical Instrument

Post by brantlew »

Found this. Honestly it's not that impressive to me. The required movements are so massive and discrete. I think dub-step is about the only thing you could create with it since dub is so exaggerated and without any subtlety. Still I'm glad people are working on these things, but it serves as an indication of how far we are from a having anything like a "dance-instrument".

The one thing that was interesting to me is how they overcame the problem of using 2 Kinects simultaneously. It would be interesting to see what real character motion capture equipment could do. That's got to be a couple of orders of magnitude more precise than this Kinect system.

They literally stuck a vibrator on one of the cameras. That way, each camera sees its own dots as good, while the other's as a blurred streak that it can ignore.

The reason for the two kinects in the first place was because they couldn't deal with the latency induced by the full skeletal tracking for actually playing the instrument. So one controls the visuals w/ skeleton mesh, and the other is hooked up to the actual audio production.

I wonder why others haven't used this to double the resolution of a kinect by using two (at least to my knowledge).

That's a pretty clever solution.
